SALISBURY, Mass. --Authorities on Tuesday destroyed a cache of "military-type" ammunition and explosives which was discovered by police serving a drug warrant at a Salisbury home, authorities said.

The munitions included grenades, dynamite, land mines and 81 mm shells, officials said Tuesday. It was not immediately clear if the munitions were live. They were destroyed at an isolated beach Tuesday afternoon, according to the Essex District Attorney's office.

Police arrested David Plonowski, 44, at his house at 28 Pike Street on Monday night, according to Steve O'Connell, a spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

Police searching the house for drugs contacted the state police bomb squad after discovering the explosives. State police called in the Military Response Team in Newport, R.I., after realizing the size of the cache.

The number of munitions discovered and why they were collected was unclear. Salisbury police did not immediately return calls for comment.

Plonowski pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newburyport District Court on Tuesday on charges of cocaine trafficking, carrying a firearm without a license and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

He was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for April 17. His bail was also revoked on another case in which he's charged with assault and battery and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Plonowski's attorney did not immediately return a call for comment.

Salisbury is 42 miles north of Boston on the New Hampshire border

Military explosives found in Salisbury home
By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff

SALISBURY -- Police laid out a small arsenal of weapons on a driveway in a quiet neighborhood here today that federal agents said they found after executing a search warrant at the home of a man suspected of trafficking cocaine.

On a red tarp spread over the blacktop driveway, authorities laid at least a dozen weapons that included a mortar, a World War I-era machinegun, and a blue-colored bomb for an airplane. The munitions also included grenades, dynamite, and 81mm shells, authorities said.

Police, who cordoned off the tan, two-story house, have given few details. The cache of munitions was discovered Monday night while authorities were executing a search warrant in the home of David Plonowski on Pike Street, according to a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Agents from ATF and the State Police bomb squad responded to the scene.

Today, a military bomb disposal unit based in Newport, R.I. traveled to Salisbury to help assess the danger of the weapons. The munitions will be taken to an isolated beach in Salisbury where they will be destroyed, officials added.

David Plonowski, 44, was arrested overnight, according to Salisbury police. Plonowski is expected to be arraigned today in Newburyport District Court today on charges of drug trafficking, illegal possession of firearms, trafficking and illegal possession of firearms, and using a firearm while committing a felony.

I think that owning the mortar is the easy part(as long as its demilled) its the live projectiles that make it the problem (or are the DD in this case)

Now too bad that maxim was taken into custody in the NE, heck the Law enforcement here might have that thing in the next auction of excess goods here in SE Oklahoma.

10 to 1 both the Maxim and 81mm are dewatts. The police love to make a big deal when the find deactivated millitary weapons and the media says the suspect had a bazooka, machinegun or hand grenade. But don't bother to say they no longer work. My old boss's wife called the law on him after a fight and told them ''He has a Grenade!'' They came to house with a SWAT team, bombs squad ect.. What he had was a PA Natl Guard pink smoke grenade given to him by his wife own brother. (Not against to own by the way) All his neighbours heard was ther police are looking for a grenade and he has a bunch of guns in his house!(all bolt action hunting rifles) They left him without doing anything but taking the smoke grenade, because his wife demanded they take it away.

I will say, a blue bomb for a aircraft is a dummy, pratice bomb and they mentioned that in the article specifically. Any ordnance painted blue is dummy atleast for the army.

That 1910 Maxim still has the right side plate on it so its either a dummy gun or live! I think there is a good chance that its a Dummy gun from IMA. Its the right version.

My money is on the supposition that the Maxim was a dummy, just like the "airplane bomb" and mortar.. I bet none of it was real. We'll see...

Sad thing is, that Maxim & mortar will probably get melted down after they convict the guy they took it from.

You can buy dummy bombs(sand filled or water filled bombs all day long on the internet and in surplus stores). For the army to get rid if it, its easy to tell, I imagine this guy has a small 250 or 100 lb sand filled dummy bomb or even smaller. If it has tailfins it proably aint live for sure, we dont put those together at all here, its done at final loading point.

Whelp, when someone is that stupid to collect those munnitions and firearms WITHOUT the proper licensing to do so....well....they have to be even more stupid than I thought or someone with a felony...or a gun runner....or, all three!

Certainly not like any of us that simply collects and has the class of license to do so, if needed.

People like that give more power to those who want to constrict and restrict us honest and legal collectors and it gives fuel to legislation against us.

I hope they put him in with 330 pounds, 6' 4" Bubba in a six man cell with four more waiting their turn at his butt! :D

Heehee! Yeah, I wonder if they blew them up with inert bombs, just to see what happened!

Actually, I bet they didn't really want to know...they just destroyed the evidence and wrote it up the worst they could....they were there 4 the drugs, and the rest was just charges to pile on the keep the poison peddler outta the public eye 4 a lot longer...and strip him of legal gun ownership 4 life

-->Wo...I wouldn't wish that on any man...but mebbe my ex! ;)

The sad thing is that if ther were all demilled and perfectly legal you will not see that in the paper. That would suck if they blew up legal demilled stuff just to hang the charge on his head. Dumbass should have just said no. :pipe:
