I went with a friend today to buy a Springfield Armory 1911 from an ad in the paper. After that I called some gunstores to find the barrel bushing wrench and found one near us that I had never been in before. The place was an absolute pig sty, which made the place more interesting to me. The the owner wanted to know what we wanted and I told him I had just called and we wanted the bushing wrench. He said the 1911 didn't need any special wrenches and didn't use any bushings. Then he said he didn't know if he had one. I was beginning to suspect he was addled when he found a used one in a show case. $10 he says. My friend paid it and wanted to see how it worked.
Go into the gunrange area to do that, he said. This place has a gun range? Go in the foyer! OK. We took the 1911 out of the brief case, I put the wrench over the the bushing and he comes into the foyer yelling " I can't let this stupidity go on!" Say what? He grabs the gun from me and says I'm going to break it if I use the wrench on it. "I charge $40 to gunsmith for idiots" he yells and proceeds to remove the bushing by hand. At this point my friend is getting really ticked. The owner then goes back into the main part of the store, still yelling (there are other customers in there) "I just can't let this stupidity go on!" My friend follows him in and demands his $10 back. The owner says give me the wrench and puts it in his shirt pocket, then refuses to give my friend the wrench or his $10. I'm watching all this, amazed that this mentally deficient clown could have gotten an FFL, much less have stayed in business for several years. My friend was an ounce shy of putting a big hurt on this guy, who must have seen something in his eyes that made him give back the wrench. After dressing the owner down verbally and advising him we would tell every gun owner we knew to stay away from his store, my friend grabbed me and we left. All I can say is he must not have any return business, or if he does they as crazy as he is. It made for an interesting morning.

I don't like crazy people because they scare me and that bothers me. Add a gun to that and it goes from bad to worse.

May I sound stupid and ask the purpose of a bushing wrench? I don't own a 1911, meant to get a RIA. My experience with one is solely from Uncle Sam. The .45s in the day needed a good bump and twist and the whole things was in pieces. Granted they were oooold already!

Some bushings are on very tight. The wrench pushes the button that keeps the bushing from rotating down and makes it easy to rotate the bushing so it can be removed.

You forgot to mention the name of the place so the people living around you know to keep away...

At least you got the wrench and got out.

The wrench isnt a required tool, as I own four of them and the only wrench I have came on my M-4 stock wrench. I can see that its worth it to keep my thumb from getting a nice pattern from the spring cover for sure. Sounds like the guy at the gun shop doesnt have a clue as they ship many 1911's from the factory with the wrench for sure.

I have a Colt Delta elite 1911 in 10mm auto, the tool makes it a lot easier, because the spring is so stiff.

My Kimber came with one, which really helps with the full length rod and spring. Non marring plastic too.

The bushing on my 1911 is real tight, I had to tap it in with a piece of plastic (body from a bic pen) and a rubber mallet to drive it back down to turn. That was with it coated with miltech. My 1911 came with a wench, no way to turn that bad boy with out it. Just a real tight 1911 no slop, no noise when shaking, just tight as hell.

I think I may have gone in there once while on leave. I don't remember much about the owner, other than he was a prick at the time (that was 10+ years ago I think). We went into a Place over on Tropicana that wasn't too bad. IIRC my favorite was one down where the strip peels off towards downtown (but don't quote me on that, it's been years and my directions suck).

That store owner is one wierd dude. It could have gotten scary. Glad you guys got out with out more of a problem

By the way, I bought a bushing wrench right after I got my Rock Island Armory 1911. Frankly, I never use the wrench. My bushing is easy to remove by hand and that's how I do it.

The Gun Store, on East Tropicana, is a good store. I renew my CCW there.

After crazy guy removed the bushing by hand, we could too. Away from the store, after I put it back on. But we had the tool and we both like tools, so he has it and knows how to use it now.

We don't like tools like him, though. :icon_biggrin:

Is just a finger savor, some folks with smaller hands find them useful, it is the one tool I don't own but sometimes wish I had one.

You are right the guy seems crazy, nobody touches one of my firearms without permission, and to quote Mr T "I pitty the fool" who tries to take one from my hands.

My firearms are like kids to me, don't touch without permission, just like when I go to stores or gun shows, I always ask permission, and seldom if ever pick one up that I have no intention of buying.

You handeled it pretty good.

I'm gonna go in there and ask the guy if he has a takedown tool for an 1858 Remington army revolver... When his head explodes I'll try to get it on Utube. (Those familiar with the 1858 revolver will get the joke.)

Maybe post the phone number so we can call the :crazyeyes:bastige up and get his side...

:lolgreen:

(Just kidding,K98)

I'm wondering if maybe there's somebody "official" you ought to tell about this, not to be vengeful, but because he might "snap" one day, if he's that bad off, and hurt/kill somebody(s). Local Sheriff, maybe? I dunno.
