I'm thinking of getting a Springfield 1842 from a local pawn and was wondering what a good price is for one in decent shape, they have it marked at $2800 and I'm sure I can get them to go down lower or at least throw in a shotgun or two.

Its hard to find someone that has these rifles listed for sale and I need some advice, any help is appreciated. I found a 1884 Trapdoor for $725 in really good shape with original Bayonet at another pawn, have it on layaway. Really want its older brother too:thumbup:

Next up is a Krag-Jorgenson Found for $1700 and M1903 for 800ish. Trying to close the gaps in the US collection.

There's a nice example of an 1842 on Gunbroker right now at $1025.

G, did you look at www.dixiegunworks.com They have them too ,at all kinds of crazy prices. I see it is a 69cal. Thats a BIG BORE ,I have 2 1777 Charllevilles in 69 cal . There a big boom and lots of fun.

42 Springfields came in .58 and .69. .58 was "sharpshooter" caliber, and used in the carbines, while .69 was general issue. It's funny, nowadays, we consider .58 to be huge, and back then .30 was considered miniscule. Well, I guess everything shrinks with age...
