Hi all,
Due to current employment conditions I am regretably considering reducing my store of South African 308 in battle packs.

I see insane prices on Gunbroker. (Asking 95, high bid 77)

What is the going price for unopened battlepacks?

Thanks anyway but I already have the humorous, low-ball estimations filed in the recycle bin.

If I go forward with sale I will post in the FS thread.

My preference is a one-time face to face for 15 battle packs here in NH.

Thanks for any real advice offered.

regards,
Tomo

tomo,
i have been seeing 7.62 x 51 from 40 cents to 60 cents a round plus shipping.

when one of the distribritors finds some in the back warehouse and sells a few thousand rounds it will lower the price for a couple days then it goes back up. with the BO thing going on right now it is a toss up on price. i guess i would set a price you can live with to sell it fast ( if your needing the money now) or set it at the market price ( gunbroker price -20%)and see if it will sell, if not lower the price a little until it sells. good luck, sorry you are needing to sell, but i figure ammo is a good investment for times like these.:airtight:

If you log in to gunbroker you can search completed auctions and sort by highest number of bids first. Gives a good snapshot of what a realistic price is, though with all the current craziness, I think gunbroker prices tend to be on the higher side than normal.

With that kind of quantity, I'd go with an auction. Its a pain to box it all up and ship it, getting raped by UPS in the process, but you reach a wider audience and tend to get top dollar. Something like 7.62x51, you can do a penny start and no reserve and still be sure to get a good price, and a low start generates a lot of activity, then the guys who search current auctions by # of bids notice it. You'd probably end up getting more $$$ by selling them individually, but its a lot more time and effort. Don't do a dutch auction though - they tend to be a better deal for the buyer than the seller. This kind of ammo sale though, you probably don't need to worry much, its a high demand item.

I'd try to get a shipping ballpark price first, like take it to a UPS shipping center (one of the bigger ones, not the one in the mall that freaks out when they see the ammo label!) and get a quote for shipping it to CA or somewhere. In addition to a surcharge for hazardous materials, they'll also ding you for about $5 if its a rural address (#%$^@$%!!!!!). Auctions need to go smoothly, and having a set amount for shipping helps.

All that said, I like listing stuff here before selling on GB. From what I've seen here they'd go fast.

Sorry you have to sell, pretty good time for it at least. Good luck!

I just bought 4 BP of SA for $60 ea. Going for $99.95 at the last gun show.

You want to sell it fast, ask $60. You want to sit on it, ask $100 and deal.

I'm sorry to hear about your employment situation, I can relate. Lost my job last March and it's been a rough time since then for me, too. I hope things improve for you soon.

Is there is a gun show nearby any time soon? Perhaps you could go there and locate someone who is moving a lot of ammunition. See what that dealer is selling the SA for, pull him aside, and offer him yours at, say, 10-20% below what he's getting. The high turnover means he'll likely sell it immediately. That way you don't have to mess with auctions and shipping, or renting your own table, and both of you clear the product quickly.

I did this some years back after the last layoffs (plural) and it worked well.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the great info guys!

Yeah, my and the rest of the department's jobs were outsourced to India.
I'm not destitute yet as I get a 7 month severance package with benefits
and 10% lump sum before I have to go on unemployement.

I'm thinking of shrinking the "wall" a bit to help cover neccessities like extending health insurance when the package runs out.

best,
tomo

I recently evaluated my shooting, and I found I just wasnt really shooting my CETMEs enough. So I sold off half the ammo I had, most of my SA battlepacks (kept a few). I asked 70 to a guy I know locally, and he bought them without question. I probably sold them a little low, but *shrug* not that big a deal.

Going rate is $70.00 a battlepack. Persoanlly I would have a hard time paying that when you can get Portugese for .48 per rd

It wouldn't be too tough to spend $70 for battlepack, that is only two cents a round more than Portugese.

BTW, there is a guy here having a hard time getting a $100 bill plus tax for a battlepack.
