What do you guys think of www.m1garand.com match rifles at $1550.
I would like to get a Garand and I am more interested in a good shooter as opposed to a collector piece. Is this a good price or should I look elswhere?
Has anyone had experience with this vendor?
Thanks,
Tom

I would get a CMP Garand as both a collector and a shooter
Much better price if you are not looking at high power rifle competitions

I've always heard good things about them Tom and they have been around a long time. They have a testimonial page with customer feedback also you can read.
I believe that is a good price, fulton wants another $500 for the rifle.
I do want to add that any CMP rifle will be a good shooter. Unless yoru looking for a competition rifle, whats wrong with the USGI version?

Thanks for the replies M1, XO,
I didn't see anything on CMP but the "fair" condition rifles that they are taking orders for.
I wanted a recommendation from this group as opposed to a feedback email
at the selling vendor. ..call me cynical I guess.
thanks again,
Tom

I live about two hours from the CMP North Store and I have seen some pretty good shooting Garands come out of there. There rifles are often better than their claimed grade. If you visit the store they will let you use their gauges to check for muzzle and throat errosion so you can pick out what will probalby be pretty good shooter (this means that it is a rifle that will shoot better than I do). Having said that, If you are looking for something guaranteed to approach match performance then you will probably have to spend the extra grand. However, I think that if you have a good gunsmith do $300-$500 worth of accurazing to a $500 rifle you will end up with a fine shooter and a piece of history for less money.

M1,
Like an immature child staring at candy he wants, I stared long enough at a custom gunshop Springfield rebuild with Krieger barrel at the Concord gunshow today. Yup, no self control,.. bought it...
It's a disease...next one will be an original collector piece. Yikes!
Did I just say "NEXT ONE" already???

A $1550 match rifle is not a "good shooter". That's a freakin' $1550 match rifle. Don't spend your money there dude.
I've been Garand-crazy for years now, and shoot them quite frequently. Moreover, I have a pretty good collection of milsup rifles on top of that. You can take any Garand with a "shot out" barrel, and put it up against any other rifle with a well used bore, and shoot circles around it with the Garand. Don't be afraid of the "rack grade" label.
If you just want a "good shooter", go for a regular old CMP/DCM Garand. The good news is that you CAN have a good shooter AND something with history and collectability in the same rifle.
Besides, for $1550, you can buy three or four from CMP and pick your favorite! Then sell the rest to me!!!

M1,
I didn't get their NM version with glass bed and NM sights. I got the GI with Krieger barrel. The difference in bucks will buy quite a bit of surplus '06.
I figured I could do the bedding once I learned more and add the sight upgrade if I wanted to after shooting a bit.
When my son gets home maybe he can help me figure out how to take a picture of it with my on-call cell phone and upload it.
I am in a good place in life and can buy what I want and have adopted that pholosophy last year after some scary heart trouble and a lifetime of scrimping on myself and supporting and educating kids and family.
Did I need that Browning Golden clays? No...but I wanted it!!!
Can't take it with ya!
I also have a lead on a CMP issue from a friend who has no interest in guns and who inherited it from his Dad who got it many years ago. Haven't seen it
but he said it's in nice shape.

Tomo, which table had that one? I was down there yesterday as well, but failed to see that one. I ended up with a Yugo M70AB and a CZ-52. Was hoping to take them out today and give them a quick break in, good weather for it eh?

Teyv,
I bought it from the Nortons of Canterbury.
They restore and rebuild these rifles to custom specs and don't really do any retail.
They had samples of their work and I just couldn't resist so I got their GI.
They had a nice Navy .308 NM Garand with all the goodies but it was a bit rich for me.
Yeah, about the weather, I was all set to go to the club open pistol shoot at 10:00 am this morning when it started raining and snowing so I decided to stay home and take apart and reassemble the new toy.

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Getting back to the original question. With the scant information you have given I beleve that offering him the current C.M.P. price is a fair offer. Now if it is possiple to post the particulars about the rifle in question that would help out. By "particulars" I mean as much of the serial number as you are comforable posting at least, EVERYTHING that is written on the rifle would be better. This way all of us here will better be able to help you out.
Matt
