View Full Version : New M70B, giving me hell.

I just picked up a new M70AB AK type, and it's already giving me hell. Everything feels like a new one, nice and tight, needs working in, whatnot. However, I do want to give everything a once over before I go plugging rounds through it, and maybe pop a buffer in there to keep wear to a minimum. So, what to do? Push the button and pull the cover off, right? Wrongo. I've gone through it all, cock, release, push button.... There's no way to get that damn tab in. I've already tried the standard method of dealing with these things when it doesn't go right (BFH), and when that didn't work I tried the second method (even bigger FH), and it still doesn't want to go. And yeah, I did use a wooden dowel to make sure I didn't ding anything.
So, I suppose my question is, do I keep trying, or do I go against my better judgement and plug a couple rounds through to see if it loosens up then try again? Everything feels somewhat gritty, so I don't want to kill something right off, though it is an AK....
Be the guiding voice on this one.

Some of the tabs can be tight to get going but they should go in and allow you to get the cover. Thats how they get the cover on. I would keep trying to push the tab foward, the only way it can move is foward, not down for sure. Something must be holding it back.

If its a underfolder, you have to press the release button on the left side of the receiver before the recoil spring button will push in to remove the dust cover.

I knew there had to be something different about it. Glad someone had the answer, or I'd be struggling for weeks before I broke down and posted something online....

...not just an underfolder, it's that way on all the Yugo grenade launching AKs

One of the few flaws with the DCI reciever is that the hole for the cover lock is sometimes not quite right and the button cannot clear the reciever.Dremmel the hole slightly larger. It is easier if you remove the lock button completely. Take an old screwdriver and cut a notch out of the center for the one side.Depress the button and grip the other side with some vicegrips wrapped with tape so you don't mar the button. Unscrew it and remove the button, nut and spring. This was something I had to address on a couple of builds.
Edit OH OK he did not know about the release button. Nevermind.

Yeah, out of all the documentation I got with it, there was no manual... it's not like it's something really complex though... maybe I was just overestimating its simplicity. Anywho, everything functionally important is clean and re-lubed so there's no gritty oil in there to wear things down too much.

Well they are the only AK that has that feature so it is kind of unusual.
I think you will really like it. Be sure to give us a a range report!

Well, a range report would be nice, but it's doing a "wintery mix" out there, so I'm going to take some time off to get everything else in clean working order and see if I can break my arm tomorrow.

I got one of the earlier M70B Century Builds with the wood forearm. I got to say, it is the sweetest shooter of an AK I have, and I have 6... It's smoth shooting, the Yugo mags lock on last round and not one jam, no misfeed and even the recoil felt smooth. The Park finish was complete and even. The parts well matched. I could not belive my luck getting a sweet & smooth rifle from CIA... Went through 3 30's and a 75 chinese drum. Sweet all the way. Every type of AK mag I have works and locks 1st try. Gotta say, as said else where, AK's aren't target rifles! but most shots on target at 100...

Finally got out and popped some in my back field, shot awesome. Right on target every time. Only problem was the severe amount of oil seeping out of everything once she warmed up. Other than that, I'm totally happy. That, and I found out that GT is a copper coated steel jacket round which sparks on impact with other steel... I'll have to keep that in mind for when I go to finicky ranges.

I could not belive my luck getting a sweet & smooth rifle from CIA... ... the AK was designed for untrained uneducated soldiers, are you surprised the :century: :century: have no problem assembling them?

Lately, it seems Century has been buying receivers from outside sources. Nodak Spud provides the receivers for the Yugos Century is building, and ORF is providing the receivers for their Galils.
It is unknown whether these entities are in fact, building them entirely.

-->That settles my other questions on Yugo UFs...my buddy does NOT have a Yugo UF...since his top cover comes off without the button press....
THanks.

"If its a underfolder, you have to press the release button on the left side of the receiver before the recoil spring button will push in to remove the dust cover."
OK, so do you have to hold the UF button in while depressing the dust cover release? (Just got me a Yugo UF recently).
Thx in advance,
Steely.

The two buttons are different and do different things.
The button in the middle of the underfolder pivot unlocks the stock only.
The small button to the 1 o'clock position on the left (non ejection port) side of the rifle is the recoil spring assembly release button. It must be pushed to release the recoil spring ass'y.
When firing grenades, the recoil spring ass'y and bolt were flying out of the AKs, so the Yugos added the small retention system for safety.
