I stopped by my favorite pawn shop and they had a thumb hole stocked RPK
I was sorta interested untill I started looking a bit closer. Cast front sight with the flash hider pin cast as part of the front sight, no bayonet lug, wrong dust cover, And the previous owner added a double hook trigger by cutting to grooves in the reciever for clearance using a rabid beaver for a cutting tool. So short answer is it's a project gun from the start. They want $450 for it but the guy will take a little off and if I can talk to my guy there maybe a big discount. Bottom line is how much more will it cost to make this thing right?

The things to make it look right are easy, a rpk buttstock and a pistol grip, plus compliance parts(not sure what the opnion is on this weather its technically a pre ban rifle or not). But the thing to really give you the idea are expensive, forty round mags, and drums. I saw a new drum at the show two weeks ago, for one hundred fifty new in the bag, but that was not out lf line for a new hundred round chinese mag. I would think if you wanted the rpk look you would want the drum mag.

I helped Henry (http://www.militaryfirearm.com/Forum/member.php?u=96) with his chinese butthole RPK conversion...
He got a basket case similar to what you describe.

Compliance parts are easy. Gas Piston, G2, pistol grip. This will allow you to use whatever cool commie RPK furniture you find. Henry scored some sweet Russian RPK furniture in the deal, and I believe he got his US made pistol grip from http://www.aa-ok.com/Pistol_Grips/Pistol_Grips.htm

Where in the receiver were grooves cut for the double hook trigger? I put a double hook in mine, it looked unaltered.

there are two cuts in front of the trigger-so you only see them when you turn the rifle over.

now i'm not an expert in AK's, but from what i've read when i got my NHM91 was that yuo had to fit the handguards and the stock to the receiver, due to differnt sizes of sheet metal they used for the receiver stamping.
if the cut grooves don't really affect the function and you can't really tell from th eoutside, i'd say go for it.
it makes a cool little project, but it might take you loads of time. i paid $325+$40 for compliance parts for mine, so i'm not sure what your take would be on that thing.
it's a lot of fun to shoot, but i think AK underfolders are more fun
and i'm still looking for a drum!!
