My Dad gave me this rifle it was my first one. I have shot it and I like it. I took to take a close look at it and found two cracks in the receiver. What to do??????? Wall hanger or find a receiver and fix it? It sounds like a pain to change it. I've had it since 1972.

Because of the heritage value, I'd plug the bore and make it a wall hanger. M1917's can still be had for around $400 if you want another one.

i agree with woodman, my M1917 is my favorite rifle, has been ever sence i got it 2 years ago. plug the barrel, polish it up, mount a very nice sling and bayonet on it, clean everything again, and hang it above your fireplace

I would either buy another receiver or barreled action and make it function again.

The barrel is HS and looks good. I see CMP has receivers with a bad barrel for 150.00. I also saw a post save one or the other. I'd have 2 of each. Maybe I should join a club and order one from CMP.

Can't wait to see the pics. I am in the process of reconstructing an 03a3 from a drill rifle receiver. So far I have lucked out and found a bunch of nos parts for it.

Looks great. I have the itch to get one or build one now. I need to finish my 03a3 first though.

1917s are supposed to have very strong receivers. Any idea as to what caused it to crack?

From what I can gather it was common when they were re-barreled. It was kind of a b___h to get the barrel off. I ended up cutting the cracked receiver with a dremel about 1/16th of an inch away from the barrel and it came right off.

You are right, the methods used to time the barrel were not exactly ideal. Most of the re-barreled 1917, 1903 and 03a3 rifles had the barrels cranked down way over specs to get the barrels lined up right. I have re-barreled several of each and usually end up using a 4 foot cheater pipe to get them to move. I have also broken a receiver or 2 trying to get the barrels out.

Looks great...
I don't blame you for at least trying to fix it.
I have my dad's 03a3 that he bought while in the uSMC for
$25.00. His dad sporterized it unfortunately but still a great
rifle. i will hand it down to my son...guns need to be shot!
