Mag,,,,,,,,,,,,,not!

I read on another board recently that an Alloy G3 mag had been left in a pan of Purple Power, which had stripped it to bare alloy. Being bored, I decided I wanted a shiny G3 mag for my Cetme. No PP on hand, so I hit it with paint stipper first. Nothing. Naval Jelly next. Took the oxidation off - still all black. Aluminum polish and a bench polishing wheel - polished the finish real nice, thank you. Still black.

What ever the German Army specified as a coating for those mags, they knew what they doing.

I put the mag back with the others.

Of the lot that I have, there are MANY different finishes... some even look like they have CAI paint jobs. I bet you grabbed one of the good ones, because I'm fairly certain that a good 25% of mine would polish right up..... now whether I want to do that or not is another story.

Purple Power does work pretty good at cleaning things up, not sure if it will strip paint though........

NEVADA , if you ever polish one POST it up. I would like to see it. If I had an alloy mag I would do it just for kicks.

Whatever is on those mags is not even close to paint, except for the base.

For some reason I like the idea of a polished mag to put in the Cetme. That might change when I get over my cold.........

Never tried a G3 mag but Purple power destroys aluminum. If left to soak to long I use it on car parts all the time it will turn it gray and it gets pitted and brittle. I destroyed a vintage carb. that way. It is great for scrubbing but don't soak anything you really want made out of magnesium or aluminum for any serious ammount of time.

I'll keep that in mind. It makes sense though when you think about how well it cleans. It would have to be somewhat corrosive.....

May be they are powder coated to last forever . Just like Vince from SHAM-WOW say (you know the Germans all ways make good stuff) then he goes back stage and smokes some more crack.
