Has anyone ventured into the world of custom making the US parts needed for the fire control group. After studying the parts and which radii are actually needed to work, I am considering trying to make a set. It would really be awesome to be able to ditch the plastic mag while keeping my wood! I know heat treating would be required and a mill would be necessary. I have limited access to both. The trigger would be the most difficult to match perfectly. But it would be much easier to change the design a tad, while keeping the top parts in check. Heck maybe even make the triggerand sear into one solid part and changing the finger pad into a better leverage design. This should also give a better trigger pull! Anyone have an idea what kinda of hardness would need to be achieved to prevent excessive wear on the parts?

I believe there are some hoops to jump thru, to get them approved as "US Made" parts. It would only be an issue if the men in black wanted to call on you, or you decided to start selling them.

There's no problem to make them for yourself. Its just like making a stock out of a raw piece of wood. No atf approval needed and it's bonified US made! If you made them yourself, and made them visually different in some degree, there wouldn't be any problem.

As long as you document the process, where the materials came from, etc.

Very touchy subject, even the metal has to be from the US, not something that was imported.. and if push comes to shove the burden of proof is on you.

Just an FYI and props to ya if you can git-r-done! :cool1:

and it wont be near as easy to make the trigger parts because if you change up the design at ALL, youll have to proove how its not FA or a machine gun or whatever... a stock is a stock, and theres nothing illegal about stocks... trigger parts, being something that has to be precisely modified could cause some problems...

but as tex said... even the metal has to be american.

I am not sure the metal has to be american, but you have to change the form and function of the material to manufacture, Thus you cannot modify fa imported parts into semi auto parts and say you make them(stocks would be another thought too), but I think you could take a plate of imported steel and mill it into fcg parts thus making them us made. I cannot remember but I think thats the idea of manufacturing.

The raw material can be from anywhere, else how do you think we all sport our fancy brazilian hardwood furniture? or the US made teak stocks for our AKs?

You can't take a foreign part, grind it raw and reblue it, no.
