View Full Version : Mil-Spec FAL?

One of the next rifles I want to acquire is a Mil-Spec (semi auto) FAL. I know there are slight variants depending on country of origin, but does anyone have pictures of their mil-spec FALs and the country it is modeled after? The reason I ask is that there are a lot of "sporterized" and "modernized" FALs out there, and I am not sure what the original battle rifle looked like. What would the going price be these days for a good condition Mil-Spec FAL?

I've been looking there, problem is I am not sure which ones are 100% accurate military and which ones have after market (Century) muzzle breaks, different furniture, ect.

These beauties are pretty much exactly what I am looking for. Is the bipod accurate for the typical infantry soldiers' FAL? Can Century FAL muzzle-breaks be taken off and a "real" FAL flash hider screwed on like the CETME? And finally...what is the going rate for a standard FAL these days?

Treadhead that top picture you posted is my G-1 :) The only thing NOT milspec on that firearm is the forearm and receiver. Everything else is original German military...and yes, German G-1s and Austrian STG-58's all came with a bipod. The G-1 has a quick disconnect flashhider that can be swaped with a BFA and a grenade launcher.

Here is an Imbel FAL that is all mil-spec. Imbel is a licensed FN factory in Brazil. This one even has an Imbel Gear Logo Receiver on an Imbel parts kits.

This one is a South Africian Parts kits, probably used in Rhodesia, which is the picture following. Notice the grenade launching front sight.

If it helps any, a couple of places where I got most of my parts were gunpartsguy.com, and gunthings.com. My kit was in equal condition to the South African one M1 Tanker posted above. I sandblasted everything, then parkerized it, then airbrushed it with Gunkote. I also bought a brand new Penguin furniture set and that muzzle device from gunpartsguy. I fired that weapon for the first time yesterday. It worked great, except that at first my gas plug was upside down in the grenade firing position. :) The only part I forgot to install was the bolt hold-open, which I must have lost. I ordered one from gunthings today.

Thanks for the pictures. I was surprised by the muzzle break pictured in the Rhodesia picture. I always thought that was just a Century muzzle break and the "real" FAL muzzle breaks looked like the one on that Brit paratrooper. Will the standard FAL bayonet work on both model muzzle breaks?

Tread Head, there are way too many varients of FALs for their to be a 1 bayonet solution. Some countries didn't have bayonets and others added them after the fact.

Then there is the difference in a Inch Commonwealth FAL (Brit, Aussie, Indian, etc) and a Metric FAL (SA, FN, Imbel)....we can go on for days:) Different countries have different things on their weapons even tho they are all FALs.

The only thing that is not original on this rifle is the pin stopping the fire selector going full-auto.

You mean minus the required US parts right?

Nope.

I don't live in the US, so those laws don't apply. It still has the original matching receiver too.
