View Full Version : Bad advice

I had a worker from the local electric company over today, checking some things out and we got to talking guns. He had just bought an east european pistol for protection from bears when he went camping in bear country. He said he told the gun store owner he wanted a 44 magnum, but they didn't have one. Instead he was told this other gun would be just as good because of its very high velocity and deep penetration. I asked him if it was a CZ52. He wasn't sure so I got mine out to show him, and that's what it was. Not only that but he was told there is only one place in the USA to buy ammo for it. I forget where that is. I brought him up to speed on the CZ and the ammo, and recommended he get the 44 mag anyway. I didn't ask which gun shop it was, but I can think of one or two that say anything to make a sale.

It's too bad there are "quick-buck" artists in the gun business as well. It's bad enough they sold him a product inferior to his needs, let alone get the guy klled. Glad you gave the buyer the right advice.

No, no, no, now... He can kill a bear with a CZ if he gets behind it and empties the clip into the base of the skull... Of course, first he has to get on the bear's back, for which I'll sell him a bear-mounting kit for 500 bucks. Then he has to make sure the bear holds still, for which I'll sell him a bear sedation kit for 900 bucks. THEN once he's fired the shots, he'll have to wait for it to die. I'll sell him a good book for 50 bucks to read while he waits....
Yeah, the guy at the gun store needs to be kicked in the nuts.

Did they tell him he has to buy Brown Bear or Silver Bear ammo, depending on what his attacker's coat colour is?

what does the 44 mag have in it?
maybe a side by side test of water jugs, trees trunks and other hard to hit objects.
my buddy was sold on the vz52 pistol after i shot thru an eight inch birch tree.

Birch are pretty soft wood. I wouldn't be surprised to see 9mm penetrate a birch tree.

I'd suggest Prvi Partizan ammo for a CZ52, euro ammo for a euro gun, but, then, I'd suggest only using it on euro-bears in euro zoos.

This reminds me of being in a Kalamazoo gun shop years ago. A guy was in there wanting to buy a 38 cal revolver as he was going to go bear hunting with it. The guy behind the counter and I just shook our heads as he was heading out the door.

to bad the big businessman got to the dumb customer.
what is really sad is there is a bunch of information out there for people to do there own research on just about anything before they buy.
most people are just to lazy to do it.
then after the fact they become an expert on the subject because then they do the research or someone informs them they were stupid to let some one talk them into buying something that will not work for what they needed it for..:icon_biggrin:
he was not smart enough to say no thanks and leave and go somewhere else to buy what he wanted.:nonono:
why do we spend so much time trying to defend people that don't do the smart things in life. maybe we have all been listening to the lib's way to much and it is rubbing off on us. gotta always blame some one else.
i sure hope that you offered to relieve him of a usless pistol. at a discount of course so he can go get what he really needs to kill bears.

Well Planning, the store owner wasn't going to LIE to a customer. Was he? It's a learning experience.
Birches come in many colors: Blonde, Redhead, Brunette etc. Tall, short, fat, skinny, ugly and beautiful. You can't tell a birch immediately, you have to be around one for a while as they blend in with the other trees quite well. Sometines a friend with experience can point out a particular birch to you, having fallen for the soft wood himself. A birch can destroy a hard wood very quickly, so caution must be taken around them.

Language barrier, possibly. Many cajuns got upset at the rumor that Dan'l Boone had shot somebody named Hebert'. (Hebert'= A'-bare in French/Cajun/Creole')

i do remember Ruger making a .454 bear gun, it was in one of my gun mags, i'll see if i can find it.
Ruger makes the Super Redhawk in .454 Casul Magnum., but at close to 60oz and a 9 1/2" barrel it isn't an easy carry. I have the .454 but still have not finished the first full box of .454 that I bought with the gun.:icon_neutral:
I hot rod some .45 Colt loads up to and past .44mag numbers and it does very well. My brother back in PA has been using it to hunt feral pigs and it is a stopper.
The also make the "Alaskan" in the .454 and .480 Ruger with a 2 1/2" barrel.
I have no interest if trying either caliber in a snub gun.

Whenever I go into brown bear territory I carry a 12 gauge with slugs. For some reason the Zoo seems to frown on that though.
If they keep that up,I'm gonna cancel my Koala bear adoption!
