Well... No dead animals to post. We got a few hogs, but for some reason I didnt get any pictures. I let a friends little brother shoot a couple instead of taking them myself, and my buddy shot one 350-400 pounder.

BUT I did get to shoot some real distance finally with the scope setup. The last time I was out there (in Sabinal) I had the scope but we did barely any shooting at distance. I think I only shot about 5 rounds outta the Cetme, and that was just enough to get some sighters and get online. I burned through about 150 rounds this time just blasting away. It was some great stress relief that I drastically needed with my wedding coming up in June.

We started out at 100... I have to lollypop the target by about 3-4 inches to hit center bull at 100 with my scope bottomed out. This is the one issue/problem I have with my scope setup, and that is that the scope doesnt have much adjustment at all. Then we moved to the 200 yard line, and there, I have to lollypop at just about the same amount. this is telling me that my apex of the bullet path is probably about 150-160 ish or so. I didnt take the time to shoot at that distance to find out... I wanted to get to the longer stuff. I moved back to 300 (scope still set on "1" and still bottomed out) and was hitting center of aim at this distance. I proceeded to blast away at 300 shooting prone on the ground, because it was so darn fun.... I painted the plate, and blasted a couple mags rapid fire, and peppered the plate (pictures below).

From there, we moved back to the water systern we shoot the real distances off of, and shot at 475, and 600 yards shooting at 8x12 plate. I didnt shoot all that well on the 475 yarder... something like 50% hits or so, but on the 600 yarder, I really slowed down and took my time and popped the plate 15 outta 20 times with 4 of the other 5 hitting the base just below the plate, and the other being a pulled miss. With that, I called it a weekend, and packed up. I couldnt beat that feeling, even if I had killed something.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I nailed the 475 yard plate iron sights with a 18" Marlin 45-70 with 7 sighters. You wouldnt believe the holdover on that puppy. something like 15-20 feet... lobbing a 405 grain bullet down there with a 7-8 mph cross-wind. And I hit it one time with my G22 too, but that was with easily 100 rounds sprayed downrange. I did kill 2 animals, but no hogs. 1 was a woodpecker that was pissing off the owner, and the other was a Coon at 275 yards with the cetme... rolled him over backwards.

heres some pics of the rifle outdoors in good light, the jeep we cruise around on, the range, and the general lay of the land out there.

Here's the rifle on the hood of the jeep... coulda used a little more light, but I had it positioned funny.

Here's the plate that I shot at 300 yards rapid fire. and when I say rapid fire, I mean double and triple taps, and general fast shooting... probably about 3 rounds per second. shes pretty damn stable when shooting prone.... man I love this rifle.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i15/jfowl31/mewithplate.jpg

Here's some shots of the range and the systern we shoot off of. The scope shots give a really good idea of what a 8x12 plate looks like at the distance we were shooting. Theres also a few pics of the rifle with some pretty shots of the land in the background. Oh forgot to mention... at 475, I clicked the scope up to "3" +2 clicks, and at 600, I was almost up to "5"... Ill have to look again and see where I had it exactly, in case some were wanting some benchmarks.

And then a shot of me and a shot of my buddy all camoed up... some think its retarded, but I got a picture of a doe staring straight at us, at less than 10 yards, and she didnt even spook... I can imagine she was wondering what that silver camera was doing floating in a bush.

Cool pics...your Cetme looks mean, I'm usually more of a wood looking guy, but I like yours, looks modern.

On the Camo, I know what you mean. That reminds me of a few years ago my dad and I (before he passed away) went out scouting for turkey pre-season wearing all camo with face masks sitting on a log being very still. We had a doe literally walk up to us, stare at me, within about 3 feet it stomped, snorted (trying to get me to move)...licking it's nose all the while for a scent as it knew something was up and the wind was in our favor.

But it just couldn't make us out with our camo on. Finally it smelled my knee, touching it with it's nose...doing so it hopped about 3 feet into the air, snorting and spinning around it took off like a shot. I'll never forget it. That's the kind of thing my old man taught me...

WOW, that is some very impressive shooting. looks like i need more practice, i'm feeling rather imasculated right now....

glad to see you're putting that pistol grip to good use. that's a good looking rifle you got there.

good pics and I really like the look of the Cetme. Where did you get the cheek piece from? I especially like that on the rifle.

man if that doe walked up that cloes to me I would be filling a doe tag for sure.

The cheekpiece is a Cherokee cheekpiece... RTG sells em. I bought mine straight from Cherokee simply because I was in a rush to get one, and they had paypal. RTG sells em for the same price, but I literally had to have it before a weekend hunt.

Whitetail season is long gone or I woulda filled a tag as well. We had a good sized 8-point buck walk right in front of that doe, but i couldnt get the camera out without spooking it, so the only picture I have of it is a blur of it bounding up the hill beside us. You cant even tell what it is.

Hunter, the P-grip is a awesome addition to the overall look and feel of it. It will be even better once I get the wood block in the cavity in the bottom rather tha nthe ironed cardboard I have in there now, and when I fill the palm rest. Its set where its at now, but to adjust it, Id have to pull it all apart and redo it all... I want to make it readily adjustable for whoever is shooting it. But its super comfy.

Thanks for the compliments though. Im proud of it, and Im glad you all like it. I honestly prefer wood as well, but I love the feel of the wide handguard, and the cheekpiece looks better on the plastic.

On another note, we discovered (some guy who runs a range tipped us) how to set up a cool range target.

Get some corrogated plastic tubing, that is the same size of a clay, and cut it into 3-4" lengths... staple it to a small (4"x4") piece of plywood or sheetmetal, and you can cut the top of it and slide clays inside it, and set it out for targets. Its a lot cheaper than ruining 1/4 or 1/2" steel, and its cool to watch em shatter. I never got around to shooting any with the cetme, but we shot em at 100, 150, and 200 with 22's, and busted the 300 and 350 yarders with a 243 wssm.

Tons of fun and tons of stress relief and since I didnt personally kill any of the hogs, I didnt even have to get my hands bloody.

AND......

I orgot to mention in the first post... I had my FIRST jam in the Cetme with G3 mags. at about 140 out of 150 rounds fired, The flutes musta been dirty, and it short-stroked one round. I hadnt cleaned it for who knows how many rounds before this weekend... probably 300 or so. I was seeing how long it could go before a malfunction, but did a terrible job counting rounds. It was over 400 though, and Ill take that anyday of the week. If SHTF, I have a cleaning kit in the tube up front, and another in the cheekpiece, so I should be able to prevent this occurrence.

In the meantime, Im running REALLY low on ammo. I only have about 40 rounds left! Time to slow down a bit on the shooting I guess.

Good shooting and looks like you had a good time. Where I shoot at
all I can get is about 275 yards, but i have been trying to get a guy
to take me with him to his shooting grounds, he gets to pop shots at
ground hogs upto 1150 yards away. I would like to shoot at half of
that sometime.

Great pictures! I especially like those "through the z24" ones.
I just finished fitting my claw mount to to my stainless CAI with "loudener".
I had to cut down the pad and saddle and remove bit from the bottom of the four lugs. When I finally finished I had to shim between the scope and the mount in the front to get enough elevation. I did not touch the claw mount otherwise though. I took it to the range and sighted it in
and could only shoot about 3" at 100yds with SA. Taking the scope off and back on zero repeated just fine. I was planning on getting my trigger done but then heard some talk of random doubling and got a little scared off. I'm not sure who did those triggers so I don't want to start any rumors or speculation. After shooting a couple of clips I cased it and shot my new to me 91/30 for a while,. When I was done I took out my ear plugs and started to pack up.
I still had my shooting glasses on and just when packed up I remembered that I had a clip of LC 7.62 "Long Range" ammo in my car. I uncased the CETME and set up a new target and the rest. I forgot that I didn't have my ears on and when I touched off the first round I thought the rifle exploded! The first thing I did was check for bulging of the mag well! Then it dawned on me. Duh!
(This is why old folks have those day reminders for their medications)
The good news is the LC LR shot 1.5" @100yds. I think with a trigger job I could do a bit better I'm just a bit hesitant on making the leap after reading
about some guys report of doubling..

I like it just fine, but if its some kind of rare(ish) stock, Ill keep it as is, and just order another one.

I gotta go buy some more colors of paint to do the desert camo. I thought I had the colors to do the chocolate chip pattern, but I dont... I gotta go buy some more at Home Depot or somewhere. The camo paints they sell there only have the woodland colors, so Ill probably ether have to color match as close as possible with spray paint, or get some little cans of some custom oil based paints to spray on with my spray rig. I wasnt really looking for all that much work if thats what it comes down to...

I may just do a rain camo, or a flectarn if its gonna take all that work to do a desert.

anyone got a source for these colors???

Esninak,

That was all south african... 1980 production.

My rifle gobbles the stuff up. Id love to work up some handloads in military brass and see what I could do with it.

Thoses stock are not uncommon. But I think that HK is the ones who used them. All my FMP have the 2 pin holes.

Beautiful rifle! Got some good ideas from it. Like the range set-up best. I've only got about 300 meters and while it's okay I would love to be able to have twice that.

Now, that does sound like fun! The range I tried last year has up to 300yds, and before that I had onyl really shot the CETME at 50-100yds. After winding it out to 200yds and popping bowling pins pretty consistently, we did some 300yd at pins and milk jugs. With a spotter, it was pretty easy to get a hit in 3-5shots using the irons. we were shooting s.african., and getting about 12inch groups @ 300 off the bipod and bench.

I got the distinct impression after shooting the CETME at 300 that it had more in her, tho...definitely 400-600yds, no prob.

jfowl31
03-07-2007, 03:21 PM
we have another plate set up at 700 yards in the green field that you could see in the distance on the shot of the rifle's right side. I was having so much fun at 600, that I totally forgot the 700 yard plate was there.

Before I got this scope on top, I would shoot at 475 and 600 with the irons with pretty good success. One thing I did run into was that technically, with the Z24, you can use the irons sights, there is an opening to look through in the mount... but the scope will crack you in the forehead if you try and do it. I learned the hard way. to get a good sight picture, your forehead is just a fraction of an inch away from the scope........ Oh well... the rifle points so fast as it is, and the scope is low enough power that its not a problem even for close/brush shots.

jfowl, you might try Testers model paint in the spray cans. They have a
lot of different colors for the military models and it is actually for plastic
so it's pretty durable. I have some OD green on a set of AR carbine stocks.

I'm in Victoria, I work at a plant south of town, the company owns at 3000 acres along the Guadalupe River, and it is swarming with hogs. The one I almost hit the other day was the size of a half grown calf. It had to be 350 lbs.

The biggest one we've killed in Sabinal was about 425, and he was a freaking MONSTER! oddly enough he only had 1 nut, so we called him Lucky.

Ive got his skull somewhere... tusks are really impressive on one side, and broken off on the other.

Typical sized boars out there are 300-350, and the sows probably 250-300. We usually kill the big boars and let them lay, and shoot a couple younger ones for good meat, and maybe a big sow to bury and cook.

If any of yall ever feel like hosting a hunt or just want someone "gung ho" to come around and kill some piggies for you, let me know and I can round up a few guys to sit out all night.
