I just got a Mosin Nagant 91/30 with a nice laminated stock. It has a few nicks and the non-laminated hardguard is scuffed and not a great match to the red and brown laminated stock. What sort of finish material can I use to touch up the finish? I have heard some mention of garnet shellac as being a good match. Does anyone know where to get some garnet shellac if that is a good choice?

Early next week I will post some photos. I took it to the range today and everything worked great. I gave the chamber a super cleaning with break cleaner and then Acetone before I went to the range to make sure that I wouldn't have s sticking problem with the chamber. I fired Bulgarian light ball with a brass shell case so there was no lacquer build up. I knew that it would shoot high without a bayonet but it still took me while to determine the best POA. Once I got that figured out I got 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards (or was it arshins?). My last three-shot group was 2-1/2 inches.

Based on input from search of another fourm I tried Amber Shellac in a three pound cut. I added a bit of Chestnut Ridge red toned walnut stain for Garands and Springfields. It appears to be a perfect match for the finish applied by the Russians when they re-arsenaled these rifles. I will post photos when I am finished.

That should work. I used the same on my laminated M44. The only place I could find the garnet shellac was via the net at very high $$ in dry form.
