For 8 years I have been fighting these leaking SKYLIGHTS. The SPANIARD and I decided to rip it all of and start over.

I had the same style.... had a sheet metal shop build a flashing that goes all the way up the side and over the top of the inside frame, with the lap joint at the bottom. flashing went out ten inches all the way around so that it extended beyond the second course of shingles above the skylight. Then when I put the skylight back on, I siliconed the HE double toothpicks out of it with RTV silicone.

This is one of the things I really like about this board. Not just "sharing" about firearms but folks willing to chime in and helpout on virtually any issue a member has. Wish a had a little roofing knowledge to share, good luck with the project.

We just redid the skylights in our church's educational building. We found by raising them up a bit (2x4's turned edgewise, to make a box around the opening), and re-covering them with aluminum flashing (slopes away on all sides from the skylight), it forces the water away from that opening altogether (and this on a flat roof!). I gotta believe, raising them a bit on a slant roof, will work wonders for you.

i have installed a lot.
most are curb mount on a rim of 2x material.
other go right down on the sheeting.
a flashing kit is what you need. then weave it into the comp shingles like a deck of cards.
some roof black jack always helps too.

These SLs are self flashing type. Would it help to FLASH the top of the self flashed SLs with that PEEL and STICK roll roof or TAR paper like WEATHER WATCH or FIRE and ICE ??? I glued ROLL ROOF over my other 2 4 years ago. After pulling them up and redoing them per the manifactures specs. I thought this would be added cover and OVER KILL . They have not leaded yet. Yes this SITE is a FAMILY , every body helps with Mentel and PHSICAL . Oh and of course FIREARMS.One day I shall get spelling lessions from one of our kind members here.

These are the 2 I redid a few years ago. I was supose to leave the bottom flashing that is built on to the SLs over the shingles and exposed. I did not listion that time eather and reinvented the wheel . Gluing roll roof over the intire flashing of the SL. I know it looks HUCKLE BUC for not finishing the shingles around it, but WHATEVER. Now that I know it wont leak . I will put THE SPANIARD on it She can knock it out.

YES, i have and had good luck with the weather watch flashing. this was used on the ones on my covered screened porch.
i have two on my sunroom that were damaged during the last hurricane that i am going to have to do what you are doing now, but i am going to wait for the fall to do them ( cooler weather). they only leak during a driving rain storm.
good luck!

I would rather be tooling on the 6er then this. I have some mods to do to it soon. I will put it in MY HOT ROD BMW thread when done. I am getting a very HOT ecu chip call the WARCHIP by Miller performance cars. Since I added the Headers , Super Trapp muffs and bigger cam to my 6er . The poor thing is STARVING for fuel . This chip will also work when I add the TURBO that I have hiding in my garage.

IMHO, there is no such thing as overkill when installing skylights! I mean, the hard part is tearing it all apart. Once you have done that, you might as well do whatever it takes to make sure you don't ever have to do it again.

If you REALLY want to know the best way to fix your leaking problem... re-roof the whole house.
Our roofing season just started after this last hail storm, and we are roofing 4-5 houses a week and have other crews roofing the same for us. I'll be roofing for the next 3-4 months probably. You are doing the right thing first of all just tearing out everything old and replacing with new. The worst thing you can do is try to fix old mistakes in flashing and caulking.
To be perfectly honest, if everything is flashed right, the only silicon or black tar sealer you need to put on it is on exposed nails... and you won't even need that if you screw it down with rubber washered screws.
I have installed probably 50-60 skylights and have never once needed to use silicon to try and keep water out, and have never had to fix any water leak damage. I started roofing houses for my dad the summer before my 4th grade year... 16 or 17 years ago now. My advice... take it down to the plywood, replace anything that's rotten or really uneven, then get the whole thing re-shingled. Surely there's some kind of storm in your area that the insurance company will cover it for... They will pay you a depreciated value up front and then once the work is done they cover the rest of the cost. Any reputable roofing company will do it for low enough to cover your deductible. We have guys who roof houses for us for $45 a square including tear-off. We get closer to $90-95.
Good luck with it. I would say I don't envy you, but I probably do, because we are already breaking 90 degree temps here, and its still cool outside. The 100 days will be here soon enough, and I'll still be nailin down shingles for 10 hours or more a day.

Thanks JEFO31, Man I never thought of calling the insurence co. I put the sky lights on my self back in 2001. I was just in a bad car crash and was on some super duper PAIN MEDs OC . The instuctions for the CHEAP HOME DEPOT SUNBUILT self flashing SLs where so CRAPPY . I just threw them away and went CAVEMAN on it LOL. My main mistake was not knowing roofing felt = TAR PAPER. Log story short, I worked on and of with a home inprovment co and old Norwegin friend of mine owned in the erley 90s . And this guy had ROOFING FELT , It was thick felt soaked in tar . I went every where trying to find it, and the sales men said all we have is tAR PAPER and looked at me like I was from OUTERSPACE. Now I know they are 1 and the same. So not knowing I went CAVEMAN on it . I laid the and over lapped the TAR paper stripes down the right first, Then put ROOFING MESH over it, then smerred a 1/4 inch GLOB of roofing cement over the MESH, then screwed the SLs down to it, Then MESHED and Cemented over the self flashing flashing , then shingeled up to it. The 1/4 of roof cement shiffted with the old roof boards and started to leak. Thats how I see it. Like I said the other 2 that I repaired a few years ago I did per the instructions and they are fine and have plywood under them , not the old 1x6s that the rest of the roof has. Sorry , I just have alot to say. LOL

NORTON, I have NO IDEA, if you remember when I posted the pics of My ENFIELD it was next to it in my yard. My wife THESPANIARD found it behind an old wharehouse here in B-MORE . She brought it home , becouse She thought it was COOL. So I have it hanging in the DOG DEN, The Dogs room/ My office. Our whole house is a mix of RUSTIC and Modern, it was a farm house in 1920. I wish it still had the land it was on back then.

No No.. Buff don't bring up Miss O'donnell as I am still cooking steaks.
But with that said. I think it is a Made in Maryland hand tool used to separate the coton seed from the cotton fiber.
Now we had a machine that would do that in Virginia and it did not work out good for us.. In fact I wish we never had that silly machine.
I think it was called a GIN.. but I could be wrong.

Sorry I don't know what was I thinking. We only grew harmless tobacco in Virginia, so that Cotton seed separating machine was used in some other states. Anyway maybe may Maryland kinsmen were using that tool to clean up some amimal hide before it shipped to England or Prussia

My night mare is one of my step sons who is going to school. He repeats all of the classic liberal crap that one sees on the evening news and from the leftists.
I could almost call him James Carville Jr. I shudder every time I think about it.
I pray to God that he grows up and sees the light.
P.S. Sorry to steal your thread.

Here in Tennessee we have holes in our roofs too, but what a novel idea to put glass in them. Those big city folks are always coming up with new fangled ideas.Who knows, before you know it someone will figure out how to put the out house inside the house!:icon_rolleyes:

I discussed putting glass in the holes in the roof with Enus, Zeke and Claude and they think it's one heck of an idea. Might try it on the out house roof too, tired of the Sears and Roebucks getting wet, the ink runs. You never know what color your butt is going to be. Zeke (middle one, the one with the nervous condition) is a little skidish of high places, so he'll probably do all the ground work, plus he's real good for driving into town when we need something.
