Ok so how do you get the barrel pin out of the trunion on a romy ak parts kit? I'm using a 12 ton press and now I have a very nice collection of bent drifts, pin punches and other stock. Can I use heat on the trunion with out harming it?

Do you have a pin buster setup from ak-builder or anything like that? Some of the romys got headspaced after they were built by a 50ton industrial press. They 'headspaced' them with the pins in, by giving the barrels a 'little nudge'. This produced a pin with a bend.
You might have to find somebody with a bigger press. . .

Use some heat and PB Blaster. Also put the pin under load, and smack the jack plate with a 4lb hammer.I have a 6 ton press and have built 19 kits, and pressed out 22 pins this way. It always works

i had the same issue, i mushroomed the barrel pin, bent about 20 items in the process, grade 8 bolts, punches etc. bent my rear sight block badly also. After i used the jig from ak builder it came out so easy and i only used a 6 ton press the second time instead of a 20 ton that i had been using. the jig made all the difference. Its well worth the money if you ask me. If you do yugos, use a big punch and 8lb hammer. yugos are easy to remove!

Yup, get yourself a pin press adapter and make sure you support the gas block so you dont tweak it. It'll come right out with some cranking. You can get em from ak-builder or tailgunner. I think tailgunner hangs out at gunco mostly these days.

with the jig it was easy, no resistance at all even on a 6 ton press.

this is one of your suggestions that has worked 100% for me, only i do it a bit different
buy one of these only much stubbier

remove the slines so its round - not too critical so it can be done with a dremmel tool
mount the largest socket (non deep) you can to it
the ram comes down on top of the socket which keeps it from kicking sideways
support your trunnion correctly - whether it be by fixure or any other method
bring the ram down on top of the socket and center the drill attachment on the pin
bring it under pressure with 2 or 3 pumps only - no extreme pressure
whack the H frame that your trunnion is resting on with a man hammer and it will make the pin move
once it has started, it comes out easy the rest of the way - might take 3 or 4 attempts at this with jacking it one more pump than the last time before you find the correct pressure, but it aint much
not near enough to bend ANYTHING
using this with your jigs from other places will also prolong your jigs cause you aint driving them down under so much pressure that they are deforming things.
i know it aint a rock or any other kind of special tool like that, but it works, give it a try :D

My first Romy barrel pin was the same way, a bunch of bent punches, grade8 bolts, ect. and I broke off the gas tube lock lever.:icon_mad:
I ended up buying a pin buster and sneaking everything into my work to use the 50ton press. The gauge was showing 30ton+ when the pin finally let go, and the sound was as loud as a rifle shot! The press frame sang like a tuning fork and the floor shook!:xyxnervous:
I finished getting the pin out and packed everything up, just in case someone came to check out the noise.:hide1:

Every Romy kit that I have built, dated 1986, was like this. You'll have to make sure that you are pressing exactly straight down, or the extreme pressures will bend your drift or pin you are pushing with. You'll need the barrel pin jig from AK-Builder or build you own, as I did. This will keep the trunnion from trying to shift or cock up while you are pressing. According to some on another forum, all of the 1986 Romys used slightly larger pins. Why? I don't know, the earlier pins seemed to be just fine.
As someone else stated expect to hear a loud pop when it moves. It will probably scare the shit out of you when it does. About as loud as .22 pistol.
A little bit of heat with a pencil torch wont hurt, but don't put the Oxy/ Acetylene rig on it.
Using the jig plate to support the trunnion helped more than anything though.
Some have said to press the pin from left to right, some have said to press the pin from the right to the left. I always press from the right side out the left. Also, use a short pin to start, after it moves you can use a longer pin to finish.

why dont anyone ever listen :snicker:
i already gave you THE trick for barrel pin removal
try smacking either the H frame, and or the press plate that the jack sits on with a 4 pound or better man hammer with it under slight pressure
if the pin doesnt move when doing this go one more pump more than the last time and try it again
i dont care if they welded that pin in there, this method will bust it loose without bending ANYTHING
heat is not needed
nor is oil
ask tanker, i helped him get his romy pin out without any problems using this method without any special tooling but a couple nickles and dimes, and a hyd press, plus a socket adaptor for his drill.
the important part is supporting your trunnion correctly - ANY barrel pin can be removed with ease with very little pressure by just smacking the press with a man hammer
the sudden JAR of the hammer coupled with the slight pressure on the pin makes the pin break loose - once it starts, it goes easy after that and no more smacking required
try it on your next build - just be sure to support your trunnion correctly - this is the hardest part of getting barrel pins out in my opinion
ive pressed pins out the old way for alot of builds. Me and Rickinvegas have had that jack under so much pressure that you are worried the jack is going to blow the seals - to the point the jack is squeeling its under so much pressure, and when the pin goes, it does bang as loud as a gun shot. i made a jig early on to press barrel pins out - it used 01 hardened tool steel pins to press barrel pins out. Ive had that thing bend tool steel, and mangle solid steel trying to get them out that way
try it with the man hammer - youll be SHOCKED
no more bent ANYTHING, and no loud pops like gunshots

+1 to what Perro said. It worked every single time without fail :)
