is there anyway to repair really deep pits on the outside of a barrel? Can it be filled with something and reblued? Im half tempted to use solder and then duplicolor engine paint.

if its just going to be painted, try bondo, or bondo glazing compound if they are really small pits.
bondo is easy to sand out - glazing compound is even easier to sand out

If you're going to paint it, JB Weld is the best filler.

I would use JB weld and Gun Coat. You can't re blue that type of product with cold blue. The paint is the way to go

question for the 1888 commission rifles I am restoring. It would take forever to weld up all of the pits, I think i am going to do the JB and paint idea. I have no intention of making these historically accurate since they were 12 bucks. I'm just trying to get them back to shooting condition, even if they become frankin-guns.

I can't believe ya'll are going to attempt to shoot those 1888 rifles that came out of the junk pile.

I agree with the above statement, these are in the shape they are in for a reason, I imagine they have been junk for years, thus good for parts and such but never intended for shooting. On metal filling these they have a barrel cover thus what does it matter what you do to those barrels. I just would be leary of first generation metaleragy from the smokeless powder era from over a hundred and twenty five years ago.
