I picked up a box of .223 Hornady TAP FPD ammo from the fun-show yesterday... 60 gr. Has anyone ever used this stuff for varmint hunting? Its a good bit pricier than the stuff Id usually go with, but I figured I'd burn 10 rounds on grouping and then use the next 10 on rabbits/skunks and such...
Ive read good things about its grouping is why I really bought it, so Ill shoot a couple hundred rounds of cheap stuff to break in the barrel slightly, and then get some groups on paper with some quality ammo for my new varmint AR upper.
I know a couple guys who swear by the 308 TAP ammo for coyote hunting, so I figured the 223 would be worth a try...
also, my barrel I believe will be 1:8 twist, but I cant remember if I specified that or 1:9... what would be the weight limits on each twist rate?
Can I shoot the 75 grain stuff through both? I'll be shooting lighter more explosive stuff for varmint control, but the heavier stuff tends to group better if the barrel can handle it.
any experience on good brands (group wise and varmint wise) would be much appreciated.
also, is Black Hills worth the cost in 223? I had REALLY good results with it in 308, but was never really all that impressed with their 223 in a friends Remy 700. Is it just his rifle? Or is their 223 lower quality than the 308?
p.s. Ill be shooting mostly monarch for plinking as I can get it at my local Academy for cheaper than any of the surplus I found at the gunshow. Something like $3 for 20 or so.
