I went to a local gun show this weekend. I came across a vendor that had a G3 clone. I asked him a little bit about it. He said that it was made by a company named Federal and that it is comprised entirely of authentic HK components. The exception of which was, what he said, was a cast aluminum receiver manufactured by Federal. Was this a line of BS or what? How many companies manufactured G3 clones? The first thing that made me skeptical was his asking price; you know what they say , if it’s too good to be true...

The aluminum receiver was made by federal, FAC, sold alot of them in the day(along with kits, and compliance parts, they kinda were the kit builders full service retailer). I imagine the kits were authentic g-3 parts, with the required us made parts to make it compliant with 922r regulation. Useally they were FCG parts plus furniture for some makes and in that case the receiver.
The fac receiver allowed the build to be made without welding the trunion to the receiver. Thus it was kinda of aimed for the home builder, springfield made some sar-8's with them too, I have handled one myself. If the price was right I might pick one up if the bolt gap was within spec and the thing looked well built. They do have the built in scope rail, I imagine that they arnt that bad if springfield did build some too with the receiver.

I own one. My only issue is the cocking tube is welded to the triple frame, instead of the reciever...so the barrel doesn't "Free Float" as in the ideal G3 with the cocking tube being loose inside the triple frame.
I have a solution to that issue...more to come..
But, the FAC/Coonan reciever is more rigid than any other.
(the PSG-1s used a pair of weld in stiffeners to beef up the floppy reciever to improve accuracy...this would not be required with the FAC..)
The built in optics rail is perfect for a red dot/holographic, with less holdover than most weapons, and should hold zero much better than the clamp on scope mounts.
Downside: Wear....aluminum is softer than steel.
Collapseable stocks dont fit, due to the thickness of the reciever and the lack of "Grooves" (Although the side folders work fine)
Past that...my FA91 is more reliable than my CETME and more parts are available right now.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the seller asking for it?

$ 650.00. Worth it?

Way too much, especially if it was the early ("post-ban") "bulgy" version with the "pig skin" texture.
The Federal Arms (FAC) receivers were made by Dan Coonan Ind.(DCI), also known for his FAL & AK receivers. I have two, both the late model FA-PSG1 type that will accept the collapsing stock. I got both off Gunbroker, one for $500 and one for $450.
Century now has some of the FA-PSG1 receivers available, from their FAC buy out.
