I just bought a pile of surpluss mags that are desperately in need of cleaning.
The plan:
1) Wait till the wife is not home
2) Disassemble the mags and soak in carb cleaner ie; B-12 Chem tool
3) Rinse the parts in the dishwasher
Other than step 1, do any of you experienced/knowedgeble folks see any problems with this?
Thanks
P.S. Thank you for the scope mount advice
Wife comes home early and finds magazines in her dishwasher.... dun dun dunnn

Buy some purple power, pour in buck, insert magazine and let soak for 15 or 20 minutes. Then spray with brake cleaner, oil and use.

M1, 2 questions.
1) Will simple green work if left in longer?
2) Got a fool proof way of taking apart mags? Ive got a 5 rounder thats giving me hell.
Thanks,
-E
Simple Green is what we've used in the Army to clean mags... Worked fine, just make sure to dilute it.

I need to go back and clarify. Purple power will eat paint...so only use it on your parked mags. Simple green will work.

I suggest avoiding dishwasher detergent. It's a pretty powerful rust producer.

I just put mine in a tub and covered with diesel fuel and let soak a while. Push the follower down a few times while there soaking, let them air dry, then wiped them off with a rag.

I just use Diesel all around works great on cosmo as well. Keep the bottom of a 5gal bucket with about 10" of diesel and it works great. Did 2 dozen AK mags and a dozen Sten magazines that were coated with cosmo sand and dirt.

yeah my 5-rounder is giving me hell too, and that sucker is COVERED in cosmoline/grease or whatever...
Im scared of messing up the finish on the aluminum G3 mags with the "paint" or whatever it is using anything too powerful, so Diesel might be a good alternative... Typically I just pull em apart, and give them a good wipe down... the grease in there works pretty stinkin good to keep the moving parts lubed up, but its not "oily" enough to attract too much powder and crap to gum it up too bad... I just pull em apart and wipe em down again if they get gritty, normally I get an old tube sock and pull it through the body, and it gets into the nooks and crannies pretty good if you use a big enough sock.

I have started using the cleaning sticks for paintball gun barrels to clean the inside of mag bodies. They are rigid enough to get all the way in there and have the "fur" on them to get into the corners with solvents. Thsi is especially helpfull when cleaning long thin mags like for the MP5 or Sten.

I dont think there is anything to be gained by useing the dishwasher that you cannot do with a garden hose or just a tub of water, the solvent soak or degreaseing cleaners recomended here will get the grease off, then all you need to do is get the residue off with water in a bucket. Better to keep the wife off the back on this one, and any black residues out of the dishwasher too(you eat there too right) :)

All I ever use is Simple Green. It works great on trigger mechanisms, barrel slides, etc., too.

I found an industrial plating outfit in Austin, Texas that does oil field parts. He bead blasted and parkerized all my steel mags for ten bucks. Great job!

Soaked mag parts in Simple Green, carefully air dried the parts, then was carefully oiling and reassembling when the wife got home... her first comment,"Are those your gun parts... why don't you run them through the dishwasher?" I am a lucky man.
Note: they will not be put in the dishwasher, I value the advice I've recieved, just thought I'd share the event
If that purple power is the stuff i am thinking of, dont use it with anything aluminum. Its got a big warning on the back saying its corrosive for aluminum and will eat it.

when i clean mags i take them apart. i soak them in dishwasher soap in a bucket, use an old electric tooth brush to scrub insides, rinse them out good with hot water and let them air dry. reassemble.
i do not use oil or anything in mine.(oil/grease collects dust and dirt, etc. inside of them)
