I got this Russian capture 98K from SOG. It was my first purchase with my recently acquired C&R license. The hot dip bluing is OK at best. Nothing much matches on this thing. It is marked CE for JP Sauer & Sohn and was made in 1943. It has in import stamp on the barrel from R Guns in Carpenterville, IL. The bore is very good but dark (blued by the ruskies?) with great rifling all the way to the muzzle. The head space checked out OK.

I took it to the range and fired some 3" groups at 100 yards with 192 gr Yugo surplus and also some non-corrosive PPU ammo as well. I have loaded up some 150 grain bullets and I will see how it shoots with that stuff. I am looking for a lighter load with somewhat reduced recoil compared with the surplus ammo which is pretty stout in recoil.

As you can see most of the waffenamt stamps are there. The heat treated spring steel used in the extractor and barrel band spring was turned red when the ruskies tried to hot dip blue it. Those items were painted black but the paint came off during cleaning. Some misguided communist penciled the SN (unchanged from the stamped number) on the receiver but he did not electro-pencil the SN on the bolt as is usually done...bad day at the gulag.

Nice rifle. I kind of miss my Mauser 98K but it went towards my SVT. Might pick up another Mauser now.

Nice rifle. Did you ahve to clean off the goopy red shellac?

That red extractor "bluing" was like that before the Russians got hold of it. Fritz's work, not Ivans.

Also, that sight protector is odd on a K98 and is the one commonly found on the Czech VZ 24 (VZ 24 muzzzle shown below under a recently refurbed Enfield). I've never seen one on K98 although it might have been used on them.

All I did with the stock was to clean off the grease and rub it down with 0000 steel wool and boiled linseed oil. If it is shellac as it most likely is, I might remove it with alcohol as I have done with some of my Mosins.

As some pointed out below, the sight protector is probably not German...most likey Czech. A friend gave it to me so I just put it on to protect the sight. There isn't much that is correct on this Wehrmacht mixmaster anyway. The stock is probably from the late thirties (laminated with a flat buttplate) and the barrel/receiver assembly is marked 1943. No other numbers match anything on this rifle like most of these RC mausers.

I was just expecting an OK shooter with a decent appearence so the state of this rifle is just fine with me. I have since added a cleaning rod (repro from Numrich) and repro capture screws. According to the receiver date a 12-1/2 inch cleaning rod should have been the right one but I measured the length from the sight to the cleaning rod nut and ordered a 10-1/8 inch rod which fits fine.

nice rifle nd you know who to take a good picture of a rifle 97
I like that Russian re-blue man is it dark or what. Their civilian huning rifles have that same blue black finish as your K 98
