MY FATHER IS AN OLD WWII NAVY VET. he served during most of WWII in the pacific. he was on a destroyer escort, when it was hit by a kamakazi fighter. he received metal in his back and head. he was the transfered to a LSI and made 33 landing ( most were in the first wave) on different pacific islands, losing 4 landing crafts in the process, he was assigned with the marines"1st marine raiders" for there initial confilicts, listed as MIA/KIA 2 times ( they sent all his belonging home each time). any way, just a little bit of his history.

i have been after him to go to the VA for over 10 years, he refused, " he had heard stories", well last oct. my wife and i finally talked him into going for his hearing and a couple other items. he filed a claim and then in may we took him in for some test. yesterday he received a letter that he has been rated 70% disabled. this is very good for them, fixed income, SS, etc.
"best of all he is going to get hearing aids,"

i am still working on him to file on PTSD "shell shock" which he has suffered badly for all these years. one step at a time.

Good for you Ron. My dad was the same way about trying to get anything from the VA for various reasons. Mostly because of the horror stories of poor care, but in large part due to the red tape. I applaud you that you took the time and effort to help him through all that, and are seeing to it he gets the assistance from them he deserves. That generation of theirs amazes me, they don't expect special treatment, they have a mind set that they just did what they had to do, and I think because of that, I think they were somewhat taken advantage of by the "system". I've seen that changing here lately, and I think it's because of more and more people like you who step up to the plate with these folks and say, "We are here to help them get what they are entitled to, and that they deserve."
So, good for your Dad,,, good for you,,, and good for the VA.
My Dad also served in the South Pacific during WWII, and they all deserve everything that we can do for them for what they perservered and sacrificed for us as families and Americans.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Captain Ron.
Thank God for men like your Dad...the world was really teetering on the brink, when he did what he had to do.
I am glad that he made it back, and that you had him around to enjoy for so many years.

So sorry for your loss Ron, I understand it well, lost my Dad two years ago and I still dream about him, he was a 18 year old medic in WW2 and it affected him very badly. Your dad is no with his comrades, no worries.

Ron...

My prayers are with you and your dad.
I lost my mom about 10 yrs ago and my dad is 80 and just had his first "small" heart attack. I cling to him now for every moment me and my family can.
My dad was in Korea in the Marines. So he is my hero, too.

thanks everyone for the kind thoughts.
i may have some time to go thru his records and post some of his pictures.
i found several i didn't know he had.
here is one of him in the texas national guard at ft hood.
i told my brother i had found a few pictures of dad at ft. hood and a few negativies i will get pictures made from them. my dad was assigned at the local TNG company.
they had 4 tanks left over from WWII and Korea.( maybe some one here can identify them. every weekend that he was off we would go to the armory and ride around the field in the tanks all day. (my 2 younger brothers and i, i was about 8 or 9 years old.) i guess i had forgotten all about it for some reason. we had some kacky uniforms that we wore that my mother had made. they were complete with E-6 rank on them.( they were JUST like dads uniform). on sunday we spent all day cleaning the tanks and all the weapons. that was sure a long time ago ( back in the early 50's). they kept these tanks very clean. every year they would load them up and haul them to summer training for 2 weeks. i think the pictures are from the last summer at ft hood. he had to get out because of his job conflict. he wore the "T" patch on the uniform, i will look it up later for the unit. it may have been the 36th div.
i also remembered that he was in the TEXAS STATE GUARD before he entered the NAVY during WWII.
