i think there might be some other similar posts, but i made this for cetmerifles.com so i might as well post it here since afterall, this is FALfiles and the trilux SUIT is inargueably, the official sight of the L1A1/FAL.

earlier, i got a SUIT infantry scope to go with my very awesome L1A1, but like thousands of the others in the country, it's tritium vial was burnt out. so i started looking for those LED deals. looked at a few... man do they look like crap. not only do they look corny, they also function corny. so i thought i'd just find a new vial to put in. i looked around, thought about cutting one of those bow tritium vials out, but then, there, i saw them, on EvilBay!!!! for $20, i purchased one and it had arrived today, late in the afternoon. so here we go.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6243.jpg
all i really needed, was needle nose pliers, putty and a cardboard knife... and of course, the vial itself.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6237.jpg
use the needle nose pliers to take the retaining ring out.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6238.jpg
look in after you take the spend vial holder deal out and you see the end of the fibre optics.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6231.jpg
viola! done!!!
just kidding. you wouldn't see crap if you had that in a moonlit night. that's how it looks when you shine a light at the fibre optics.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6233.jpg
after you scrape the white stuff w/ the old vial out with the exacto knife/hobby knife/boxing knife/whatever, you fill it up with putty
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6239.jpg
mash the new vial in, remember it's gonna be in a good position for the fibre optics to receive light. insert everything back in to the assembly...
and.........
day:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6193.jpg
night:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSC_4085.jpg
and its' done! no batteries needed! always lit whenever i need it(for the next 10 years at least...)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y268/baylorhenry/DSCN6257.jpg
so there she is. ready for combat no matter day or night, as long as she's got ammo, she'll tag anyone up to 600m. is yours ready? get the vials!!!!!

thanks guys, i went boar hunting this weekend.. MAN did that tritium work great! with the crystal clear trilux image at night, all i need is a little moonlinght(or a blazing bright spotlight), and i'm on target, even with 150, 200m targets.
on the last night we were out, i had to test it out on farther targets, it hit a medium sized racoon at 100m with no problem(ok maybe it wasn't that far, but i normally don't shoot pass 100m at night unless i'm with my bushmaster). well, the brits got that one right, no wonder they still use those SUSAT's on their SA80's
here's a photo my friend shot when we were tracking them in daylight, the swamps were crap to walk through, and they stank like pigs, but it was loads of fun playing detective out there.

Henry, how do you like your trilux scope? Ever have trouble with the welds coming loose or getting it zero'd? I've been meaning to get one, but haven't got around to it yet. They look pretty robust.

maybe i'm lucky? i haven't had any of those problems that the people always had. i've heard that some scope mounts the welds or the rivets get loose... mine's held zero and the mount i believe was new, ever mounted. i got it from www.gunthings.com .
it's shot fine, i mean it's no sub MOA grouping but it'll generally hit a 3-4in group at 100m. gotta remember these are battle scopes not sniper scopes

Howdy
If you folks don't want to mess around with e(vil)Bay for your tritium inserts, i found this site:
http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=137473
Seem to do good business (they're in Taiwan)
They also have sizes that will work in your Yugo AKs
Here's a review thread (http://www.akforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14694).

Thanks for the info,I ordered a Trilux from Gunthings the day after I read this post. Now I'm getting a lot of exercise jumping up and down waiting for it to arrive. How long a vial can you put in one? The ones I see for sale are 3 X 23 MM,almost an inch long.

oh 3x23mm is way long
mine was about 6-7mm long and about 1mm thick i guess
you could get something a longer, because mine was a little over 1/2 the length of the vial holder...
yeah get one that would fit it more snugg so you could get a brighter vial to shoot more light in your pointer.
you could barely see mine at dusk, and i mean barely, but in a moonlit field at 300m, i could actually see a DPS target's silhouette and see the tip of the pointer too... so that kinda gives you an idea!

Well Henry,I found the E-Bay guy,and bought a tritium vial. But my SUIT scope came from Gunthings without the plug to hold the vial.I called Brad at Gunthings and explained what I was trying to do,and he sent me one free. What a great guy to deal with.I also bought an extra rubber eye cup,an original. So yesterday I mixed up some Durham's Water Putty and installed the new vial.Works great now. Thanks!

henry, this looks like a chance for you to make some extra gun/ammo money. i'll bet people would pay to have this done to there scope. it looks like a great idea. think about it.

Henery thanks for the how to. I am going to be doing the same thing with my UPO2 russian copy of the SUIT for my AK. I may have to break out the dremel on the light source holder since I got 6mm vials and the holder looks like it was designed for a 5.2 mm one.
But thanks so much I will post pics of it here.

I got live tritium in my UPO-2 tonight.
I need to see if it will hold up to shooting 300 or so rounds then I can proclaim it alive again.

So I took a look at henry's post about the SUIT sight for the L1A1 and I decided that it could be done to the russian copy.
Caveat Ok henry I have no camera fu when it comes to this digital crap. i still shoot medium format silver.
1s tritium Google is your friend, or actually you guys here.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1593.jpg
Then I notice that my vial holder off of the UPO is kinda short.
So Dremel to the rescue
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1592.jpg
then I jam a bunch of hobby putty into the hole
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1594.jpg
Then I placed 2 6mm tritium vials in the hardcore American tradition of overkill.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1599.jpg sorry for the bad pic.
I sit and let the putty dry.
Here is the reticle normaly
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1600.jpg
Ok the very bad pic. If you look closely you can see the tritium green. I realy need to get a real digital camera sorry for the quality
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a346/moj_jimmy/DSCN1604.jpg
As I locked myself in the laundry room the tritium was fair to medium. So i busted out the ELCAN I have and wow it is bright compared to it.
So this thing needs to have 300 or so rounds through it to make sure the vials will not move but they seem like they are pretty secure.

wow good job man! it's really suprising that a little bit of tritium would actually work huh?
how does your whole unit look on whatever you have it on? oh and what's the circle on the right of the reticle???
