I custom paint bikes and cars for a living. I just figured I'd expand my canvas.

Both are the same stock, that I did as sample work. I painted the POW theme first, then sanded it down and did the USMC look.

I'm hoping to generate some interest from people in my work. I haven't done Duracoat or similar coatings yet.

If you can do that, Duracoat is eeeeeeeasy. Just make sure you clean your airbrush very well.

Thanks.
I just have so much automotive and one-shot lettering paint, that it's what I used for these.
I'll try Duracoat if and when I get a customer who wants it.

How did yo get the stocks so smooth? Bondo? Mine are full of dips and imperfections.

I do these like I do body work.
-
The stocks shown are synthetic, so any scratches were light. I used a thick automotive epoxy primer, then sanded it smooth before painting.
If you have some. I would suggest fiberglass resin on larger damage on synthetic stocks, before priming.
-
On wood stocks, I strip them, try to iron out the dents, and use the epoxy primer as a base, shot thick, and then sand. If I have minimal defects, then I shoot more primer as a filler.
On larger defects, after priming and block sanding, I use 'bondo' that has the short-strand fiberglass in it, sand it smooth, reprime with the epoxy primer and prep for painting. (The bondo won't adhere to the wood).
-
It sounds like a lot of work, but it's the same prep I use on Harley parts (at least the metal ones, :icon_biggrin:).

Hope this helped!

Bob,
Thanks for the info. How do you strip the old finish on the synthetic stocks? Most chemical strippers would harm the stock material or is there a special one?

Thanks again,
TJ

They look good and all but i draw the line at putting holes in vintage iron, There could be salvageable parts on that.

Nice Work! Now you need to restore an old, beat up SKS, and put a mural of Linen, Stalin and Obama on the butt with a hammer and sickle on the pistol grip and "Not on my watch" on the foregrip.

Sanding or media blasting. Any thin areas of leftover paint can usually be sealed in with the epoxy primer.
Or if the finish is already basically smooth, use it as the prime coat and shoot an adhesion promoter over it.

It takes a little experimenting, and I haven't researched all available strippers to see if there is something that won't harm the synthetic.

I may have to do that!
(Maybe superimpose Obama's picture on a scope lens.)
