guys, yesterday I officially swore into the United States Army as a contracted cadet. I should get my commission in 1.5 years. The cadre agreed that we could have a friend of mine who was on leave to swear me in.

here are some pics:

Congrats cadet, had quite the ceremony there. I did mine in civilian clothes in our cadet lounge over lunch. Commissioning, however, was in the sky room of the student center 16 floors up.

Do you know what branch you want to go yet? Armor is freakin awsome.

I'm shooting for MI
I know a few languages and they're giving me my masters in International Journalism, so I'm doing a lot of polysci work.

However, I'm hoping to detail my 2Lt time out to Armor or Infantry, depends on the situation i suppose.

As far as the ceremony... well I was supposed to contract a few months back, but I had LOTS of family issues with it, but earlier this week I told cadre I'd like to get something I know I'm wanting to do anyways out of the way, so they told me to just swear in on Friday. I asked if we could go to the ring on honor on campus to do it, and voila...

It's a phase in ROTC when they make sure you're not wasting their time so you enlist as a cadet. You need to do it to get your scholarship... and I think it's great because you don't have people thinking if they're committed or not, that way they don't waste their time doing cadet stuff if they're not commissioning.

Ya.. I am Military Intelligence branch detailed Armor. I wouldnt trade the Armor side of the house for anything. However being an MI Lt doesnt sound very interesting. I would heavily lean towards Armor or Infantry as a detail branch. Do a combat tour then transfer to MI. I am currently in Iraq as an Armor Platoon Leader and will go to CCC about a year-year and half after i get back in Oct 2010. :America:

Congrats Henry! You can just about arm your own platoon to start!
What is the 18X-ray program about. My son is talking it up pretty heavy. He's pre-med but has been hinting to this program for a while. He's at North Georgia College in Dahlonega. You Ranger school guys know where that is.:icon_biggrin:

Congratulations Henry,

As a retired after 30 years Armor Officer I congratulate you.

It is not the easist the way to go necessarily!! But you are hanging in there. Good job. I was enlisted for 10 years before going to OCS. Bennings School for Boys.

The added pay as an enlisted E-6 should help a lot.

Again, congratulations, keep your head down, and I hope you get Armor.

18X is Special Forces cadidate selection. It is on the enlisted side of the house where you enlist and go to basic, airborne, then straight to SF selections. Being premed your son might be thinking of being the SF medic, which is a surgeon with a machine gun. Pretty badass, he will be in school for about 4-5 years before making it to a team.

Congratulations Cadet Chan! Sooner the you will be 2nd LT and wonder when that happpened! I remember my commissioning ceremony; after 20 years as an enlisted man (4 Navy, 16 Coast Guard) by a Coast Guard Rear Admiral, onboard a Coast Guard Cutter, moored on the Potomac River in DC. My salute, and silver dollar, went to soccer team mate, and member of the 3rd US Infantry, Ceremonial Honor Guard, from FT Myers...

...but be careful about those armor guys - rattling around in a tank does something to their brains...

Clank, clank, here comes a tank. That's what we grunts used to say. Funny thing is we were riding in an Alcoa Aluminum M2 Bradley.
Used to be you got rank quicker in the infantry, both enlisted and officer. I see most officers still opt for Ranger school going by your pics, Henry.
