I got out of work a little early today. So, I couldn't resist zipping off to the range to try out my new A1.
It would have been Zumbo's nightmare--when I got there, three other shooters were there. One guy had an A2 with a stainless barrel, one guy had a standard looking A2, a 70-something gent had a 308 AR of some kind, and me, with my A1.
As usual, everybody was friendly and accommodating.
I was basically function testing today, mainly shooting at the berm to test reliability, and my A1 worked perfectly--fed, fired, ejected, and locked back after the last shot. About 60 faultless rounds.
I was shooting Guatamalan 55gn m193 loads--great ammo that I think is all gone now--if you find some, buy it.
I did shoot at a bullseye---the sights were way off, about 5 inches left, and six or seven inches low at 100 yards, yet I put 10 rounds into a group of about two inches.
Did some rough sight adjustment, but a fairly large thunderstorm was blowing in, so I called it a day.
Anyway, I'm very happy with my new A1, can't wait to wring it out some more, and dial in the sights to my liking.
As I shot, I couldn't help but think of that first A1 I shot at Camp Perry. I also thought about Gen. Curtis Lemay being handed one at a party and shooting, resuting in the first Gov't order for AR's, for the Air Force. It must have blown his mind!
