I was under the impression that a pistol(rifle cal) was illegal if it could fire readily available armor piercing ammo. I think this was the case with the Olympic AR pistol if memory serves me, because of there being Ap so readily available. Was this the case, and if so, what changed because I see folks building AK pistols frequently and I want one myself. Another possibility is a neuron misfired again and I got it all mixed up with something else.

Unfortunately, since the first AK pistol was built many years ago, "Armor piercing" (standard soft steel cored military) ammo has been illegal to import.

So don't worry about AP.

All laws apply otherwise.

I happen to have a qty of 7.62x39 AP, would this be a problem if I built an AK pistol and they shared the safe together? I know the ATF can do bad things to good people, and would not like to have a problem.

I'm not up on the law, but I just thought it was illegal to 'sell' if it could be used in a pistol.

Not illegal to fire in a pistol.

for the exact interpretation legalese in your state.

"since the first AK pistol was built many years ago, "Armor piercing" (standard soft steel cored military) ammo has been illegal to import."
--Import is the key here. you can still buy that copper washed chinese stuff, but at a buck a round, hardly worth it.

The AK pistol has its own set of rules, it is counted as a handgun, and licensed as such. The diff betwn a SBR and an AK pistol is that the AK pistol can have no stock, only the pistol grip, IIRC.

fed law states that you can own armor piercing ammo for your pistol but you can't transfer the ammo to any other party outside of a BATFE boy or a PD. In other words you can stare at it on the shelf or shoot it but thats all.
