My dad gave my son a 35 year old Marlin Glenfiled 30A 30/30.
It has been sitting all this time in a soft case under a bed in the humid midwest. If it has 3 boxes of ammo through it I would be surprised.
I was amazed that there was no surface rust, very minimal rust at on internal parts and several rust spots in the barrel.
There is no pitting on the finish but have not addressed the barrel yet.
How do I go about cleaning what ever rust is in the barrel.

I have used NAVAL JELLY and a green 3M pad on a cleaning rod to fix this same kind of pest before. . Let the NAVAL jelly set for what ever the jar says . Then rub the cleaning rod with the 3M pad -cut to size to fit the slot in the cleaning jag. When your happy with it then run apatch with FLITZ or some kind of metal polish in the bore, the oil it. Your good to GO.

Gun oil / bore cleaner and brass brush followed by patches. If you can find it, use some PB blaster and a wire brush followed by patches.
Right now, I would get some penetraing oil in the bore to stop whatever rust is in the bore from spreading.

For myself I'd wipe it out and let it soak in a good penetrating oil, and then hit it with a bronze bore brush. I've done this to my old yugo barrels with good luck and you know how nasty they get. Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get them clean...If its not too bad you can brush it out then swab and fire a couple of rounds through it to clean it up.

I did this on an old gun I never planned on shooting again. I don't know if it damages it anymore but it got all the rust out...oven cleaner. Gotta do it outside as it's some nasty ******** but it stripped down the rust. Then I hosed it real good with PB blaster after and then a good oil down.

+1 to PB Blaster... that stuff penetrates EVERYWHERE in the bore, and it can break up all kinds of crap along with stopping the rust. I have plugged the muzzle with rubber, sprayed in PB blaster til there was a ton resting in there, then plugged the chamber, then I store it on its left side for a day, then flip it to the right side, then upside down... you get the idea, to let it penetrate everywhere... It took FOREVER to get the crud cleaned out that it broke loose... that was a M38 Mosin.

Don't let that oven cleaner touch the finish on anything on the rifle though!!!!!! That crap will eat ANYTHING!

0000 steel wool and sewing machine oil. that fine a steel wool won't hurt your barrel and unless the rust is really bad it will come out quickly and won't hurt the shootability.
if it is heavier rust go to a coarser grade of steel wool and work to the finer grades use oil liberally.

Yeah I didn't mention that. Like was said, it's like Rosie O'Donnell, it WILL eat anything.

Go to walmart, buy a box of Remington 30/30 shells, open box, load pointy end first into the gun.
Now here's the hard part.
Find someplace secluded where the bullets won;t impact anyone/thing and fire the entire box through it.
When you get home, smile at a clean bore.

Well, if it was me, I would have already run a brush and bore cleaner thru repeatedly before firing. Actually, you could also get some of the lapping bullets, but I doubt there are any already loaded for 30-30. So you would have to buy the bullets (projectiles) and load them.

Marvel mystery oil... let it soak for a while, then steel wool. OR Hilti gun cleaning spray. Best dang CLP I ever saw. Hard to find, though. Really, though, the Marvel Mystery oil works great.
