Broken shell extractor question

I have four different broken shell extractors (7.62 x 39, .223, 7.62 x 51, and 7.62 x 54R) but I have never actually used one or seen one used. Can someone give a step-by-step procedure for their proper use? Thanks for your help.

Slide the smaller end into the chamber and inside the rest of the casing that's left in there, close the action if it's a bolt, or on a semi let the bolt slam into it (just don't ride it forward) and open the action. The idea is that the front will grip on to the top of the neck and the back end will act as a new rim for the extractor to pull on. Once you've pulled the broken case out, unscrew the base from the broken shell extractor to get it out of the case, and that should be it.
