using ATI 150 gr FMJ, Springfield SAR 4800, bolt carrier travels about 3/4 " rearward and stops, will not extract cartridge at all, you then have to bang the butt of the rifle on the ground and put pressure on the charging handle at the same time to get the brass out of the chamber. Gas hole is clear, gas piston is not bent, no burrs to be seen on bolt or carrier. Gas regulator on A, not on G. gas tube straight, gas piston does not bind...
what are we missing?
turning the regulator towards the muzzle, ie increasing the gas actually makes it more difficult to remove the cartridge.....
extractor is fine......
lubed....
any ideas?

is the charging handle an "inch pattern" or "metric"?
the Springfield SAR 4800 charging handle needs to be metric or it will jam in the charging handle slot.

i never had ejection problems, but i did have chambering problems where i would have to slam the muzzle off a tree to get the bolt to lock forward.
my problem was the new us gas piston. worked fine with the import, but i had to turn down the new us one a few thou to slide freely.
point being, assuming you have the gas adjusted correctly, which would be my first guess, but you said you had that figured out, check everytihng for binding. not only the bolt, but also the charging handle as planning mentioned, and the gas piston in the tube.

no binding anywhere, not the piston, not the tube, not the charging handle, feels like glass,,,,
bolt retracts 1" and brass is hard jammed in chamber.
friend installed a penguin stock, but rattail is in the detent with action closed...
it is a friends rifle....
again, cannot detect binding anywhere

check to see if you don't have a piece of casing in the chamber

Have you swapped the stock back to the factory stock and tried to fire it?

+1 on this, You could have broke the head off a case and the case is still in it.

nope, live rounds feed and extract perfectly when cycling manually
have not gone back to the TH stock yet.....
If you find out anything, let me know, My Century does the same thing....clean as a whistle. I don't know what it is.:icon_confused:

will try some difft ammo this weekend...
unless we find something else

If your gas tube is installed correctly, the regulator adjustments don't help, the stock isn't binding it up when fired....ammo is the only think I can think of.

I kind of think it might be the ammo as well. I had read some reviews on the ATI .308 and its a mixed bag of "work great" to "absolutely horrible". Apparently there are a lot of issues with this ammo sticking inside firearms like the PTR, Remington 700, M1A and DPMS .308
Here's a link to some customer reviews. Not really an in depth review or anything but gives you some peace of mind that you aren't the only one having this problem with the ammo.

sometimes the wrong size gas piston wont work right or gas tube may have compressed threads at end ,hanging up piston.or a ding, dent,or wave in travel area.
Gas piston sizes are.
Enterprise has used .4270 and .4275 diameter
original R1 is .4285
original IMBEL No. 1 is .4295
original IMBEL no. 2 is .4305
DS Arms pistons are .4305
original STG58 is .4310

and on some old rifles that have set, the chambers will rust inside on some guns, if the pits get deep enough in chamber, even after cleaning, when you fire the rifle, the brass casing will swell inside chamber into the pitted (rusted away) area,
my father had a .300 win mag parker hale that needed a new barrel because chamber had rusted and after you fired the gun, it would not extract and we had to use a stainless steel rod down barrel to drive casing out
and you could see on the brass case were it swelled in chamber

I hate to sound like the village idiot here, but did you turn the gas regulator adjustment fully closed and try to fire the weapon? If so, this still does not rule out a possible cracked gas tube. (Cracked near the front during a ham handed install and not removing the retaining pin)
After that, I'm with the others on ammo (but that rusted chamber sounds suspiously like the problem with an AR I've seen.)

try a .308 round with some shine to the brass , and roll brass case on something really flat and smooth like dinner table, you will feel if there is a slight bump in case
if no slight bumps in case it would rule out chamber
