Got out this morning under sunny skies and gusty winds, intending to zero my A1 sights. I also brought along a Barska Colt-clone 4x20 scope to zero.
As before, my rifle was shooting low and left, so I started adjusting the sights with an A1 sight adjustment tool (a 5.56 cartridge). After several test groups at 100 yards, I dialed in the sights to where all the rounds were in the black on the NRA 50yd bullseye pistol targets provided at the range. I had to move the rear quite a bit to the right to center the group, but I am hitting what I am aiming at now, with fairly tight groups. I used Guat M193 and South African M193 for this. The South African is good ammo, though I don't think it is available anymore.
I pre-zeroed the the scope by aiming with the irons through the mount, and adjusting the crosshairs onto the bull. Then the fine tuning began. After a couple minor adjustments, I was firing 1.5 inch 5 shot groups with the Guat ammo, right in the x ring at 100 yards. Someone had left a clay pigeon on the backstop, and I couldn't resist going for it--one shot, one blasted clay pigeon.
The Barska Colt-clone scope, while a budget optic which cost about $50 from Cabelas, has a nice bright image, and seemed to work very well. I have always like the Colt style AR scope, and it looks right at home on an A1. The turrrets do not have click adjustments, but they seemed to work fine.
I put about 150 rounds through the A1 today, and it worked perfectly. It is alot of fun to shoot such an accurate, light rifle, and it really stands out from the run of the mill A2's that are always at the range (two more today). I find I really prefer the triangle handguards.
As for ammo, I will probably try some of the Prvi Partizan serbian M193. Been hearing good things about it, and it is about $60/200. I am going to be shooting this rifle alot!
