Id like to make a bull barrel for the cetme im building. What im going for is better accuracy. Since theres not a whole lot I can do to the bolt/action I figure a bigger barrel might help.

So I figure I can get a 24" .308 barrel blank to start with. When I go to ream the chamber, are there any specs that it should be at? (like a nato spec. or something?) The other thing is how are the chamber flutes cut? If the chamber flutes are too hard for an average machine shop setup, does anyone know someone who can do this?

As far as the triple frame goes I may make an oversize one, but id really like to make the barrel free floated. Ive seen the aluminum tri rail hand guards around and im sure i could attach it securely at the receiver somehow so that it would support itself as well as the cocking tube. I plan on only using a scope so the loss of the front sight wont matter.

If anything this is an experiment. I dont know of anyone doing this before, but if anyone has seen anything id be interested. Also any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Thanks

Didn't JLD do some longer/heavier 'target' barrels a few years ago?

Oh, and welcome!

Thanks, I think I posted some stuff on the cetmerifles.com forum but that was a while ago.

I saw that the ptr91s came with a heaver barrel but I couldn't find anywhere that sold them. I was actually thinking of going heaver than the ptr91s, possibly the diameter at the trunnion all the way to the muzzle.

I know I've seen heavy barrels for either the G3 or 91 but never for the Cetme. If I recall properly there are some minor, but important, differences about the way the barrels are cut or the triple frame. Interesting idea, let us know if it works out. I haven't seen a heavy barrel available in quite some time.

a lot of guys use G3 barrels for their Cetme builds... Drine just did one a little while ago. I think this guy is looking more for a BULL barrel not just "heavy"... sounds like a cool idea and very doable with the right machining... like you said, youd have to get the barrel exact where it presses in the trunnion, have to make your own triple frame or make some other way to attach the cocking tube.... and on top of that youd have to cut your own flutes... with the right toolin, I think it could be done, but it would be a big PITA, and really, if you just get a good PTR or whatever make barrel, you can shoot some tight groups. YMMV, but Im thinking its not all that practical for this platform... not exactly customizable.

The flutes are the tough part. I do not know how they were originally cut but I would guess with some kind of broach type cutter. A custom cutter would have to be made to do this at a machine shop. And I think it would be cost prohibitive to set up to do one barrel. There was one of the old custom HK gun builders that was doing flutes but I can't think of his name.
OK I found his name, Murry Urbach He does them with a EDM machine. He charges $250 just to do the flutes. Like they say in the racing business "Speed Costs, How fast you wanna go?"
There is another dude doing them with a file jig? But he does not say if they worked for him.

Thanks for the info about cutting the flutes. I was thinking the same thing about a broach cutter. EDM is probably the easiest but also more expensive.

I found this website, they make a G3 sniper. http://www.dentrinity.com/ClarenceLai/g3sv.htm (crap I read closer and its for a airsoft bb gun. It has become alot harder to search for stuff on the internet with all this airsoft crap everywhere)

Wow, rapid fire looks like it has close to what im looking for. thanks for the replies!
