I was looking at my dingy handguard and felt that it would be a bit more BAMF and would assist with the barrel cooling if i were to cut some vent holes in it like the big boys do. So I did with a dremel... Man it took a while but I think it turned out looking nice. I didn't feel like cutting the last pair above the chamber... meh
what do you think about my new modification?

Oh I'm also expecting to send her off to have a heavy target barrel fit in along with a new bolt and re-park at Warbirds custom... I know longhorn sent his off... how is the turnaround time on his work?

It looks really nice Henry, I think you did a great job! I haven't had warbird do any work for me, but I hear he does nice work. Is yours a Springfield M1A?

Looks great. Definitely adds some visual flair to it.

I think the workmanship is nice. However, I believe we stopped using slotted/vented handguards on M14's, M25's and M1A's because of the heat signature and the heat waves off the barrel screwing up the sight picture.
You may experience those issues as well.

Main reason they stopped using them was they broke easily

I understnad the downfall of the vented handguards, but does it kill the sight picture that bad? my .300WM has a naked barrel under the scope and there isn't a mirage from the barrel when i shoot it(it's more like a mirage from the range at longer distances)
Do you really think it would affect a target rifle that much? I'm not looking at getting into a sustained gun battle with this rifle so i assumed that it wuoldn't be that bad
I jsut had a fulton armory replacement handguard in that i have on reserve JIC this is that bad,,, but I hope not b/c i really like how it is right now more
