Tanker and Henry are both on the money.
Cost is important in determining it considering how many companies offer AK's.
The Saiga is a nice starting platform if you want to do the conversion.
If you have money to spend, a milled AK is nice, Arsenal models and the Veprs are also top of the line. Norincos and Polytechs are expensive and mostly for collections sake.
WASR's aren't bad, very budget oriented.

Build it and they will come...(more and more AK's...not the ghosts on the field)

Oh heck Henry, I missed out on the 69 buck romy G kits, and such, I did get some of the yugo kits.
On the thought of building, In the day, I could get built rifles(abet they were some banned variant ak) for less than kits builds for sure. If you are dilligant and dont want a build, a SAIGA conversion is easier than a full build. I picked up one of my saigas for less than 150 here in SE OK, but again back in the day, but new they are in the low 300's now if you find the right dealer. Get the 922r required parts, then you can convert to the evil assault rifle and place the features back on the rifle.
Getting what you want is key, if you have the money to spend, I would look for fine used guns, if you want one out of the box, the low budget choice has been a WASR. There are lower budget guns comeing out now though especally if you are willing to go 5.45x39 over 5.56x45 or 7.63x39 but the ammo aint available everywhere, you have to become your own stocker, as wally dont have it.
Another question is what caliber, there are the three above, plus .308, 7.62x54r and 8mm.(these are just calibers the rifle was impported to this country, there are wildcats and others I imagine for sure) and that will be another question you need to anwser.
Welcome to the wonderful world of AK rifle collecting.
P.S. dang it, now writeing this thread has me wanting another caliber of ak in 8mm.

I didn't really want to go much over $600 BUT I always do. I had a saiga 308 I was going to convert but I could never do better than 3" MOA with so I sold it. I thought about a Romy to go with my PSL but I'm open to anything. Also I have 2 SKSs and lots of x39. I have heard good things about 5.45 so a 74 type is also on my mind. I really like the VEPR but they are hard to find.

ON a VEPR now, I aint sure if you can touch one with twice of what you want to spend, I saw one on another board for just over a thousand and I had serious thoughts about it.
If you really want a .308 ak, the choices are few, the saiga or the mitchell yugo imports. As you said on the .308 you had poor accuracy from yours already, not sure what made it a problem child though. (was it a 16 inch or a 20 inch barrel, and did you have anything that could be stressing the barell?)
I would think if you wanted also to build one, a ban variant chinese might be within the prices you set, if you could find the right rifle and change out the ban variations and put enough 922r parts into it.
Just more food for thought.

yeah I know the VEPR prices, I've almost bought one a few times. My Saiga was a 20". I was going to make a Saignov but it didn't shoot that well for me so I sold it. I'm more interested in just a good AK right now.

Kind of interesting to hear the Saiga didn't do so well accuracy wise. One guy on a different forum had his Saiga .308 doing 1" groups at 100 yards which was better than his Vepr. I kind of thought it was hard to believe considering the Vepr is a much beefier AK variant and little more accurate.
Not sure if the ad is still up on sturmgewehr but there was a guy selling his Vepr in 7.62x39 for the price he paid for when they released, around $650.00.

an Ak rifle, should be almost full proof on operation, if there is a problem child its not the design, but really more the specific rifle for sure. I imagine you can take a handfull of sand, pour in thur a ak, and the dang thing after shakeing it out should still function with a new mag, imagine that with almost any other automatic rifle made.

$300 apiece in mine. 2 of them run like a champ and shoot straight. They third...well, when i get it back from storage I'll fix it.
If its built correctly, they all work.
