OK, so I made a trip to Orberndorf to see the Mauser and HK museum this past Easter, and wouldn’t you know but they were CLOSED for the holiday.

I was really disappointed and have been brewing about it since. I mean it is not every day that you get a long weekend in Europe with nothing to do.

Well, as luck would have it, I had another long weekend and plans to go to Munich to visit my cousin anyway. So I made a side trip to Stuttgart, and then south to Orberndorf am Neckar (again).

To my delight, the museum was OPEN, and I was the only one there, so I took my time, and did not have to fight over the best spot to take photos.

And I took LOTS of photos, about 125 of them, too many to post them all here so only the highlights.

The museum is very small, probably only about 1800 square feet, and it did not take me long to see everything, but it was very cool nonetheless.

Unfortunately the signage was only in German, and I don’t read enough to translate.

OK, here are the pics:

Thanks, the lighting in that place really screwed up some of them with the glare on the glass cases.

This is just a random selection of the many many photos taken there. I missed only a handfull of displays with the camera, and they were mostly some of the "other" industries that Mauser got into like sewing machines, automobiles, etc.

Too bad they don't have them in english. If they were here we would have to have them in Spainish.

Steve,

Pic 1 is all percussion muskets and rifles by Mauser
Pic 2 is some of the first Mauser bolt actions from converted percussion rifles circa 1871
Pic 3 is all early cartridge handguns and revolvers by Mauser
Of course Pic 4 is a detailed drawing of the workings of the C96 "Broomstick" Mauser handgun
Pic 5 is a couple of interesting rifles, the top one is the STG45, direct decendant of the MP44, and the bottom one is the CETME Modelo A, also a decendant of the MP44
Pic 6 shows a photo of a G3 barrel and parts of the hammer dies from the hammer forging machine which stamps the barrel down around the pilot seen in the cutaway as it is pulled through the barrel from muzzle end to the chamber end. You can clearly see the profile of the chamber in the pilot, and the flutes for the barrel. from this you can clearly see that the chamber is also forged as the barrel rifling is made, and it is not "cut" into the barrel afterward. Once the barrel is forged, it is trimmed to length, the flutes are cut into it, and it is then profiled along the exterior.
Pic 7 is what I beleive to be Machinepistol versions of the broomstick mauser design.
Pic 8 is the well-known HK MP5 A2, with the G3 below and the MP5SD on the rack behind.
Pic 9 shows a G41 M on top, then a G43, and last an MP43.
Pic 10 is of a dual-mount MG81 aircraft mounted machinegun.

Like I said, this is only 10 out of 125 photos.

If you have something Mauser that you want to see if I have a photo of, just post it here, and I will see if I can scrounge up a pic for you.
