I just got these two 1965 vintage Swedish Army White gas stove/cooking sets for $12.97 from Sportsmens guide
It runs off Alcohol. There is no pumping , priming or presure to set. You just light it. When the fuel runs out you pour more in. My son boiled water in it last night, it took around 4 minutes. I got it to boil water for coffee and heating Dinty Moore stew when we cannoe or camp.It comes with a water pot,pan windscreen, fuel bottle and alcohol burner. It is a good no brainer set.

I don't know how to post a link. But just punch in Sportsman's Guide, then punch in surplus gear on search bar at the top of their menu. It is on page 14 of the surplus menu. By the way I was wrong, they are $12.97 for two(sorry). There is about 80 pages of Army surplus, most of it from Europe. I have bought stuff from them for years.

I had a buddie that used to have one of those. He got good service for many years with it.

It was tough to get going in the winter though.

Got some of those when ctd had them, they will do the job, light cooking and such. They had a great deal on them. The stoves are alot like the trangia ones.

What variety of alcohol did you use? Methanol or denatured ethanol.

You should use ethenol, or methnol, but they are more expensive, I have used rubbing, it works, and is cheap. It does leave a residue, and you need ventliation, there are some good primers on stove fuels on line, heres one.

I know that one source of fuel, is heat, gas line water remover(methnol is one), and its on clearance at many places now.

THey seem to recomend ethenol(everclear), for safety though, and you can drink it in a pinch too, :)

I have used a Trangia for years--the fuel is denatured alcohol, you can get it by the quart at home Depot or Lowes.
They are unaffected by cold, and actually work better in wind.
Though they work great, they do have lower boil times than other traditional camp stoves.

In a pinch, since it is an open burner, you could any alcohol t 100Proof or above, sterno, or diesel. Diesel is a biyatch to light tho.

Unaffected by the cold ?k98k792, these things have a preheat center where you put fuel also and the pool will burn before the rest of the fuel gets up to pressurizeing the burner and burning under pressure. Thus they are less affected by cold especally with the windscreen to help after they warm up. For the price they are nifty camping or back up stoves.

I said "lower boil times"--I meant higher...
I have a basic Trangia, which is just the burner unit, with a folding windscreen/pot support. I have often carried it on cross country skiing trips for a quick cup of hot cocoa. I also bring it backpacking. My pal usually packs his white gas backpack stove, and we use the trangia as an auxilliary burner.
I suppose other fuels COULD be used "in a pinch", but denatured alcohol is what they are meant to use, and is easily available, burns clean and hot. One match lighting.

I just tried to get a couple. They are out of stock, unless they are listed somewhere other than the link someone posted earlier.

You can use many types of fuel, but flame temp is the problem, too hot and you can melt the material.

CTD still lists them, they are a little more but they seem to have them

Minor post
I used that 1965 Swede stove this weekend on a river trip and it worked perfect. No hassles just light a match and start cooking. I boiled potatos cooked a lamb chop, SPAM, pork & beans and toast. Plus I made hot water to wash up with. In my opinion it does fine for simple foods but is difficult to fry anything with.

But the main reason I am posting is my man ELEFANT IV set me up with a good old fashioned American Army surplus canteen cup stove. I used this to make coffee and cocco in the service. You can brew up a big cup of instant coffee no fuss no muss in about 5 minutes. These fit right in your canteen pouch so they do not take up and room. This would be good for a fishing trip or to heat up a can of soup.

service out of mine. I love the fact it has no moving parts,to prime it just hold it in your hand. I've outfitted my buddies with these. I consider it a critical piece of winter gear. The plastic "fuel" flask will not trigger airline metal detectors either which is handy if you travel. :drink:
