Well after buying parts since June, building since January, and asking question after question on this forum, I've finally welded up (partly anyway) and test fired my HK91. Slowly but surely I am nearing completion. On Sunday I drilled the necessary holes and a few extra in the receiver. After heating the trunnion up with a torch I MIG welded it together but I didn't get to the cocking tube as I had forgotten to pick up a copper heat sink and a cheap set of feeler gages for cutting up to measure the cocking tube gap.

When I had pressed in the barrel I had a perfect .020" bolt gap and it jumped to .023" when I hammered in the cross pin but that may just be because I bought a new bolt carrier from the one I was using during the press. So today I loaded a 20 round mag full of some DAG german 7.62 ammo I got from the sportsman's guide a few months ago and fired off 5 rounds. I checked the gap and it had dropped to .012" and I said to myself "Okay, that may be alot but I guess it's typical" and went about finishing off the next 15 rounds. I checked the gap again and it had now fallen to .006". I can't even imagine how or why it would fall that much. The only thing I can figure is that I'm using a new german barrel i got from HKParts.net when they were still $175 and a new german bolt head with all new internals and these parts are now breaking in.

But anyway I had a blast shooting it for the first time and even saved the first brass casing I fired from it. Here are the pictures and if you're wondering why I have a tropical green handguard and olive drab pistol grip and buttstock it's because when I ordered a stock set from RTG they sent me an FMP one but I'm not going to make a big deal out of that and send it back. So thanks to everyone who gave and continues to give advice and experience as this could not have been done without your help. I will keep you updates when I get the front sight finished and get it painted.

Congrats on the build ! Looking forward to seeing it finished, how much will the final cost be ?

Looks really nice. I have one that is nearly ready to shoot. They can really try your patience when building them.

Looks great, but I noticed that you only had the cocking tube plug welded on the sides. I believe that you'd be well served welding across the seam where the cocking tube meets the receiver.
Your cocking tube might be solid as a rock and not moving at all but it could be moving just a bit in and out and causing a false gap caused by the carrier hitting the cocking tube support. Just a possibility.

Your barrel pin appears to go across the bottom of the barrel. Is this the common location of these pins? I ask because I need to repress my barrel and I have to drill through the reciver to get to it.

Thanks,

I don't know the exact final cost of this but I do have all my receipts. I just haven't added it all up yet as it pains me to think about it. I stopped keeping track after $700 or so but it is over $1000. I could have bought a parts kit but I knew I would be buying alot of new parts anyway so I just bought things grouped together as much as I could.

The cocking tube isn't welded in yet so I know I'm not getting false gap. I've got plus size rollers and a NIW locking piece on the way so I'll see what that does to it.

The barrel pin is always in this location. If you would like I may be able to take some measurements of where it is so you don't have to drill all over the place but these will only be relative to my rifle, yours may be slightly different so don't use them as exact measurements.

GeorgiaG3,

I would appreciate some dimensions. I think that would be a good thing to have out on this board and I know it would help me from making my rifle into swiss cheese.

Thanks,
neilca

The center of your hole should be 8mm from the edge of the trunnion. I say the edge of the trunnion because I don't know how flush your trunnion is with the receiver. Next, take a piece of paper and cut it to 44mm and lay it across the receiver and center it. Take a pencil or scribe and make a line where the paper ends. This line will be centered with the hole when you are looking at it from the sides as if it were in a drill press and you were going to end mill it. I'm pretty sure the CETME would have the same dimensions but I can't be 100% positive on that.

A CETME barrel pin is located farther back from the leading edge of the trunnion than an Hk. Depending on the style used, (there appears to be at least two) it could either be 10mm or 13mm back from the edge. Best way to do it is measure back 10 mm to the center of the hole, drill a smaller diameter hole to locate the pin, and then carefully hog the hole out to be centered over the pin...

Thanks guys,

That helps a bunch. I have saved all the other posts on how to repress.

Have you heard if Bravo5 has improved their barrels? I really would like a 20" barrel. I emailed the PTR people but got no response from them.
