MODERATOR NOTE: This discussion was originally part of a For Sale thread that I split. The original question was this, is there such such a thing as a 0% receiver. Nalioth answered with the following. Some people originally thought the seller meant an 80% receiver. -M1 Tanker
No, gentlemen, there are such things as AR15 receiver blanks. They resemble artsy-fartsy AR15 receivers, and have NO work done to them at all.

They sell zeros, its the billet after either forgeing or casting, no holes. Its what they start with at the factory to make the receiver. They aint really cheap, but allow the builder to change mags and other things. They arnt the easy way for a build though. But if you wanted to do something different they would give you a place to start.

This maybe a worthless comment. But I started to mill one of those out on my Bridgeport from a print. I was not going to do the mag well or anything because it was going to be for my 50 upper. I gave up. There was just going to be way too much time involved. Unless you want to work for $1.00 an hour or have a CNC mill and a EDM machine, get at least an 80%. Cool paper weight though!

I hate it when people delete their posts, making all the responses in the thread unusual in their content. . .
( originally there was a post right after gunkgys original that is now mysteriously gone )
BTW, those 0% receivers, make GREAT paperweights, too

I split the discussion that was in the marketplace.
I deleted the post.
The post DID NOT CONFORM TO THE MARKETPLACE RULES.
When you post comments in the for sale section, its trolling as far as I'm concerned. The rules have been up since day one. For those that missed them, they are a sticky in the for sale section.

MID, its not anyone's fault. If you have a question from an item in the For Sale section, that doesn't pertain to you purchasing it...its easy, start a new thread.
Guys, I'm trying to keep the For Sale forum clean so you can sell/buy without having to wade through posts that simply don't apply to the transaction at hand.

so does anyone actually USE these 0% receivers for anything except a paperweight? I mean whats the real use here? Just someone who wants to do it themselves because they can or something, or is there any reason for anyone to get one and finish it themselves?
how much do they run?

I imagine this is what the company in california may have played with to work up the approved blind mag california approved ar-15's(there is a ar in cali, that you open the receiver and load the mag by hand then close the upper back to the lower), or as big steve said he started working with one to make his lower for the fifty. Its for most folks just a big paperweight(some one was selling zero fal receivers at one time too) thus for a dedicated home builder, it might present a challange, for makers, its what everyone starts with to make a ar, manufacturers buy these to make their receivers from, they start from somewhere, just some one marketed them to the public too.

If you have a CNC machine and want to make AR15 receivers, thats what you buy.

Frank Roderus does a 0% wth a grizzly mini mill. RCG tv has all this stuff on line. Frank gives you the tools needed jigs and all the stuff ya need. You will need a good vise though. He sells the AR 15 jigs to make it easier.
This is a link to his ar project. http://www.roderuscustom.tzo.com/
Read this stuff. I have the video and will be trying this soon.
Frank walks us through his processes and tells us what he did wrong and what to look for.
I hope this helps a little.
P.S. I bought my castings for 22 dollars apiece in 03.
