The wood grips are totally do able. There was someone on the "old" boards that was manufacturing them on a limited basis.
/Photo document for multiple reasons. 1) for ATF if you ever need to prove compliance and 2) We like to watch.
//side note on the ATF thing. Think about taking photos with the workpeice on the cover of "today's" newspaper.

2031 the buttstock was far worse so far.as far as compliance goes without the present laws i'd be useing factory wood.this gives me a reason to have more tools!gota love that.

Are you gonna do it in just the normal HK shape? or more of the PSG-1/ sniper style?
This is one of those projects that I just need to dive in and do it like you are. I got the woodworking tools to do it all, I just dont have the motivation nor the time.

Amazing, I go to sleep asking for pictures and when I wake up, they are hear.
/Looks good so far. I'm always amazed to see the work involved with fine woodwork.

also, are you gonna leave that corner up there where it notches around the trigger guard???
seems like its gonna get in the way of the trigger.
Oh, whered you get the wood from? Looks like walnut... I do think you may have just inspired me to start yet another project............ I hate you.
westcoast
05-15-2007, 08:45 AM

So I'm assuming that you are going to use this for your home made CETME reciever project? Or is this for another one?

West Coast I know what you mean, I am at the tail end of a 5 year restoration project on my 1969 Corvette. I started 5 years ago to do a few clean up projects and ended up taking it off the frame. :icon_biggrin: A new ZZ4 crate motor and several thousands of dollars later I have just about finished everything.
I didn't document it nearly as good as I should have plus seeing it gutted and gilled for so long really depressed me.
Guns are a lot faster and cheaper to work on!

Now all you need to do is make a walnut forearm and buttstock to match the grip!

AWESOME! I'm totally inspired... whered you buy that chunk o' wood? I'd like to do one with the palm shelf and stipling all along the grip, but after seeing how slick that looks, looks like itd make a perfect battle grip!
VERY nicely done!

33 years ago my hobby turned into my job and now hate what i used to enjoy,i have no intention of producing these and losing interest in this Hobby.the grip still has a long way to go it's not finished just starting to come to shape.no real plan just keep shaving till it fits and looks like a pistol grip.as far as the wood i cut my own firewood, some just gets put aside for a few years waxed up.someone mentioned matching buttstock and forearm.the buttstock is rough shaped ready for final shaping/sanding.the forearm is yet to be done.
MicroPilot
05-21-2007, 11:55 AM
So you've carved your own furniture set out of chunks of firewood? That is AWESOME!:coolp: :fing02:
I think the forearm would be rather easy to make, the pistol grip the hardest.

Any suggestions here?I'm lost on this one,sporter style,round,semi round,flat sided,thin,fat ????

Gives a nice hold. Kind of like the AR. The round guards are nice but I qualified with an OLDIE in the 80's. Triangular shape gave a better platform to hold or sand bag. Just my .02. It will look great either way. DR
Smokehouse69
05-28-2007, 01:32 PM
I agree with Drine, I like the triangular style best, it just seems to fit my hand better, and it does sit nicer at the range when you're shooting.

Make a "pistol" foregrip like I've seen on some AK's. That would be TOTALLY unique!

05-31-2007, 12:17 AM
That is truly some amazing wood work!!!
Otis61
05-31-2007, 01:40 AM
Yeah. I dont know. I think round and thin. I agree about the feel of the old AR forarm. I qualified in 79 myself, But thats an AR not a CETME. Simplicity is good.
jfowl31
05-31-2007, 02:18 AM
My preference would be a copy of something like the G3 wide forearm, but without the bipod grooves on the bottom corners. I like wide flat forearms, just my preference... makes shooting off bags really nice, and I just like the forend to fill my hand when I shoot off-hand.
casey439
05-31-2007, 05:58 AM
i have to agree a wide forearm with out the bipod slots but have several vent slots .....just my 2 cents

all good repleys thanks for the input! Now back to the garage.I too qualified back in the 70's.not really tring to build something to look or feel to much different than what it is.since this is a Sporting rifle i'm leaning towards round and thin.Otis i do think you hit it square on the nail.roundish thin easy to handle in the brush.i'm lean'in towards the stock shape shortened.

I wanted the same look. I easn't able to coax anybody out of one. I can't remember who had the forms to make them either. wildbillcody has the US repro which are softer than original. I really like it. Maybe someone bought a MARS and isn't using it.

Its coming along great. Nice job on the forarm. I showed my wife the pic you posted last night. I told her that it was basicly built out of some steel tubing and a couple blocs of wood, she said " Oh, nice." I cant wait to see the finished product so that we can see the shine of this uniqe build come through. Its gonna be great.
