How can I keep the top wood piece from crawling toward the front sight ? I thought about bending the rings just a little and putting them back on.

The handguard shouldn't be moving. Are the barrel band retaining springs not catching them? Or did the stock get sanded so much that the barrel bands are now not fitting snuggly?

I've got dozens of different Mosins and none are exhibiting that problem, so I'm not sure what's causing your handguard to move up like that. I'm not really sure how you would bend the rings - the designs makes it so that the end pieces of each ring are already really close to one another. You'd almost need to find a way to make the ends overlap, but then they'd likely no longer fit over the stock.

You might want to try lightly bending the barrel band retaining springs to see if you can get them to latch on a little better.

Cheers,

the barrel band are tempered and will break easy if moved to much, so go easy.

like ptrthgr8 said: it sounds like the handguards have been sanded to much. this is common when someone refinishes them. best bet is to find some one with an handguard that has not been refinished and try it.

if it works then buy another handguard.

Thanks for the info. Before I got the rifle it could have been sanded but that was many years ago.The most I do to a mil sur rifle is clean the stock and maybe some true oil.

most of the mosin nagants were refurbished at least 1 time, sometimes many times. it was make work for many people for many years.

kind of like what we may be coming into in the near future. make work by the govt. to keep people working.

Try cutting a square of metal of an old aluminum pop can and put it under the handguard as a shim.

I've seen two other Mosin's do this too. One is mine. It has'nt been touched since the russians shipped it over here. The other is a friends I don't think he did any sanding either.
