London, England (CNN) -- At least 12 people have been killed and 25 injured after a gunman -- believed to be a local taxi driver -- went on a shooting spree through three small towns in the English county of Cumbria on Wednesday.

So you mean we need to ban taxi's now?

England's gun ban doesn't seem to prevent gun related crimes...

No but firearm-related crimes are VERY low there. The flipside though, is that stabbing and blade-related crimes are high.

Banning legal firearm ownership just leads to criminals using other weapons.

True but it feels like maybe they were hoping it would have stopped it all together. I'm probably wrong because I don't know what England's crime rate was like before their ban. Since their stabbing related crimes are higher they don't seem to be keen on doing a knife ban.

Don't laugh but there was serious discussion under Thatcher and Blair to ban some knives!
I agree that the UK is a good example of the unintended negative consequences of restricting legal firearm ownership.

Their officers wear stab vests instead the bulletproof vests like ours do.
I remembered getting a lecture on why I should not carry a pocket knife, how it was a dangerous weapon and having it taken away all 30m from leaving the UK boarders.
customs lady- "Sir, where are you from?"
me- "The US"
customs lady- "Do they allow you carry dangerous weapons as such in the streets in the US?"
me- "Miss, I can carry a pistol on me in Texas if I want to"
They also have a tendency to ban things in response to threats... after a few rubbish bin bomb threats they took them all out of London. Now crap just piles up in street corners.
Then they had the bomb scare at luggage deposits and they don't have those at railway stations anymore(you have to pay WAYYYYYY more than other countries because they actually have people storing it away and such).

Wow, now that is a crazy response. So do butchers need to get a knife license if that ban were ever to pass? I can't believe the British would categorize a butter knife alongside the likes of assault rifles.

When I was there the gangs of thugs would push people down onto the subway tracks and not let them back up until they gave up their money.
And the ban was on "pointy" knives, especially for teens.

Just remember that it was one of our esteemed and illustrious liberal congressmen a few years back that wanted to do away with the slot or pin on a knife that would facilitate opening it with one hand… he saw no reason for such a device. Probably didn’t like bayonet lugs either. When was the last bayonet charge by the way?

Latest I read, the guy used a shotgun, which I believe are still (for the moment) relatively un-regulated by UK standards.
The only jury I ever got close to being on was a murder trial, the murder weapon was a golf club. And that was in AZ, before CCW when the number of openly carried pistols would have the average Brit politician crapping himself all the way to the airport....
People will use what ever they have at hand to commit murder, removing one implement just makes them more creative. No guns? They'll use knives. No pointy knives? They'll use a cleaver. No cleavers? Find an axe. Baseball bats, cricket bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs... hell, how 'bout a convenient tree limb? Oh yeah, the axe got banned so you'll have to cut it off with a hand saw. Bit 'O pipe, what? One day you'll need a weapons license to be a plumber in Not-so-Great Britain. What a bunch of knobs...

Click above to see the nasty anti-gun TV ad that Michael Bloomberg and Sarah Brady are launching across America.
I told you that billionaire playboy Mayor Michael Bloomberg and arch-gun hater Sarah Brady were conspiring to ban all private firearm sales and create a de-facto national gun registry.
I said this was going to be their top priority. And now, it is.
They’ve just unleashed a national ad campaign which has me scared.
Please, watch this video. It’ll make your blood boil.
For Freedom,
Sincerely,
Dudley Brown

Thatcher's Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988 (following the Hungerford Massacre) banned all handguns, semi-automatic rifles and shotguns and pump action shotguns. But you are correct in that single and double barrel shotguns are relatively un-regulated in England (Northern Ireland being a whole different world when it comes to firearms).

Some interesting figures in this piece, though unfortunate that this twat was a licensed owner:
This kind of thing is not supposed to happen in Britain, which prides itself on its strict gun laws, pointing to the relatively low rate of gun-related deaths — 39 in 2008-09 — as proof of their effectiveness. There is no constitutional right to bear arms, and there is a blanket ban on the ownership of handguns. Anyone who wishes to own a firearm or shotgun — and Bird used both — has to be thoroughly vetted by the police and granted a renewable license. The latest figures for England and Wales show that, in a population of more than 60 million, there are 138,728 people with certificates to hold firearms, owning 435,383 weapons among them, and 574,946 shotgun certificates covering 1.4 million shotguns. The countries do not have an armed police force, although the increased threat of terrorism in the U.K. means more police are carrying arms in specific areas such as airports and some public buildings.

This is the next "logical" step- BAN ALL TAXI DRIVERS.
The U.K. Gov't can send payment in the form of Alexander Keith's IPA to me.

Last I read in American Handguns was the UK has four times the rate of violent crimes as the USA.
Was that taxi driver a real Englishman or from the mid-east?
Britain is a neutered society. As long as they have their beer and football (soccer), the government can do anything they want to them, from what I saw when I was working over there.

Yes Bread, Circus and cheap 'Victory Gin'. It's hard to believe these same people risked their lives to fight in WW2, Korea and the rest of the Cold War only to have Germans and Russian have more freedom than the British in 2010

How would the British police even deal with a firearm problem if they can't equal or exceed the force they are facing. Might as well be called France.
