On a buddy's XBox live. lets you play ppl actross the net, limited to about 24 players at a time.

As a war historian, I do get a kick outta the historical places we get to play team battles...Verdun, Eder Dam (post-bombing...kuhl!), Poisson, Carentan, etc.

You can pay to get other maps, too.
2-4 of us play under the handle "Wee-ist viking" so if you see us (Wee-ist viking, Wee-ist viking1, Wee-ist viking2, Wee-ist viking3) dat's us puttin yer kraut arse down with the BAR or Thompson, stealin yer flag, mantling yer tank, etc.:rockon:

How hard is RO on a "old" comp...I play DOD all the time...gonna get my own comp to set up for DOD,CS and HL.....Do you think a well built laptop could handle that or should I just go ahead and get a tower and set one up?...My sisters BF is very computer savy..He has a couple of patents if that puts it in perspective. im running RO Ost front on a 3 yr old laptop, it has 1gb of ram and a 128 mb graphics card, at least you can change the settings enough that it still looks good graphics wise but doesnt lag. The new games that use DX9 gives my computer really hard times. If i were choosing i would get a desktop just because you can keep upgrading the graphics cards. However dell and Hp have good laptops right now that have really good 256mb+ graphics cards.

if you cant find it at walmart you can download it through steam for 19.95

im not joking this is really realistic, it doesnt give you a round count, you have to manually cycle bolts, change hot barrels in mg42 and mg34's, the weapons look real and fire like they should (open bolt) You can also fix bayonets and kill with the bayonet when your out of ammo, or slam the butt into someones head

the screen shots really look like what you see on other websites. This is WAY better than COD2

they are fun too, you have HE and AP rounds, HE is fun with infantry! or the mg in the tank as well

tank battles are fun when you have at least one additional crew member fighting by yourself you are sitting still firing and reloading, if you can move a bit your harder to hit. Also you have to aim between the turret and tank body for a more effective shot or hit from behind

they have made the game as realistic as possible

you probably dont need a new one!

Wish they'd put as much effort into telling us what controls what as they did in giving credit to everybody and his brother at the back.

on my server im not running VOIP, because im playing on the same machine and i dont want to cause it to lag or anything. Ping rates looked good last night. If you look in your game (actually in the game when its running in the main menu) there is a link to a file in your game folder (something like help and i forget what else. Its a really long PDF file that tells you all about the key mapping and the game and how to play. I remapped my keys (config menu) so they are all the same for all my games. To do so click on the place you want to change and then push the key you want to use. Keep in mind if its allready used and you change it then you need to replace that other thing with a new key.

I'm not sure it's "required" but you're going to suffer without it. I'm new to this game, but one thing I noticed is that, if you don't already have the map of the particular game you're trying to join, the program has to download it from the gameserver...I don't recall what size the ones I ran across were, but it took a couple of minutes on my DSL, which is considerably slower than a fast cablemodem, so you might spend some time twiddling your thumbs waiting for them.
I've never installed a game via "Steam" (www.steampowered.com) before, but it seems to work well; evidently this is the method people used who mentioned the "$20" for the game....however, there seems to be free downloads of version 3.1 or 3.2, and a patch for 3.1 to bring it up to 3.2; I didn't have any luck getting 3.1 to install, although it might be worth giving it a shot yourself, to see whether or not it's worth the effort on dialup. Just google for Red Orchestra and you'll find the downloads I am talking about. Doesn't cost anything to try, but time...

For those that have never played an online game, a couple of hints...
Shutdown or disable other programs that might decide to do something in the middle of your game, i.e. an email program trying to let you know that it's checking for new mail might mess you up with things showing up on the screen, sounds, etc.
AFAIK, it's best to run the game in full-screen... to get OUT of a program taking up your entire monitor (nothing else to click on), hit ALT+TAB to toggle through the other running programs. Doesn't much matter what one you pick, once you're out of full-screen, you can click around at will.

It seems like the game is just bogging down my system....I turned off all other running programs and tried it that way...I got up to the point where you can pick a russian or german player but then it just lags like mad.

did you unzip it to te correct folder? the first time I tried it the unzip program installed them to a new folder within the "maps" folder, rather than just to the maps folder itself. I had to manually move them to the correct folder to make it work right

also, have you tried turning your graphics settings all the way down?

i have some tips for making the game run faster

first close everything you dont need running, especiall hidden stuff that shows up by your task bar near the clock, then

after the game is up and going hit crtl alt delete and right click on redorchestra.exe and set priority to high

you can also increase your page cache file for virtual memory as well and defrag the page file as well

you can also disable precaching

Thanks. That's a hell of a comprehensive document.
It *ought to* be included with every Windoze computer, either in print, or on a CD/DVD, or at least a file on the desktop. Gamer or not, it has quite a load of useful information about computers in general.

by the way i did a few tweaks to make my game load faster and disabled the windows key, now if i accidentally hit the key it wont minimize the game and cause everyones game to freeze or kick you out like last night

thats a good download rate, there is an option for talking through the game but i dont have a mic and i have it turned off for the multiplayer game in the server settings, im not sure what that would do to the connection speed. For people who want to chat to their team in the game there are options like roger wilco and a host of other programs

I finally got a new used computer but I can't open the game. Gives me a Microsoft C++ error. Says something about an error causing it to close. I think I may need to reformat and start over. Any clue as to how to wipe the whole computer and start fresh without being a huge hassle? I've got nothing that needs to be saved on it, except for drivers I guess. The problem may lie in the onboard video card. Maybe I'll try my old card in this computer tomorrow.

i think you buy the windows of choice and then just install and away you go.

you need to do the full reformat, in my opinion its the only way to go, doesnt take much longer but will format the disc in NTFS File system. If you dont see this happening then you didnt do a full wipe of the hard drive. You can do this easily from the windows xp cd
