rustypirate, or somebody that is in the know i need some help!

i have got my trunnion welded in and i have read that i need a gap between the bolt carrier and the plug in the cocking tube.

i think rusypirate told me that i need somewhere in the range of .010 and .020

when i welded the trunnion in i slid the bolt and carrier into the trunnion and i am getting a bolt gap of .021 and on the cocking tube if i pull the handle back against the pin i get .019 snug, but if i push the cocking handle to the front of the rifle on the other side of the(must be a slot or over size hole in the cocking handle) hole i get about .060.

when i work the cocking handle it will push the cocking tube out of the receiver about .125

i checked the other rifle i have and when i unlock the bolt with the cocking handle it will open the bolt gap up about .125

i don't want to weld this thing together unless it is right.

also the cocking handle pulls away from the tube around 3/8 to 1/2 inch

so what do you guys think?? i'm lost here,,,, and everything was going along great until this

input please

thanks

Basically with the bolt locked into the trunnion and the cocking tube slid all the way in the reciever if the cocking handle carrier has alittle bit of play (towards and away from the reciever) then you should be okay. However if there is too much play it will cause problems. I believe the thickness of a dime is about the amount of play you want to make sure you have.

the .010" to .020" distance from the front edge of the charging handle support to the plug at the forward end of the cocking tube is when the charging handle is folded down against the cocking tube and the support is in contact with the tube on the bolt carrier.

This distance is the amount of play between the charging handle support and the bolt carrier which prevents the carrier from slamming into the charging handle support and damaging the rifle.

It also keeps from haveing a false bolt gap indication resulting from the bolt carrier pressing against the charging handle support and thus the cocking tube instead of pressing against the bolt head and thus the barrel face.

OC, If the rifle cocks hard because of insuficient unlocking of the bolt carrier a simple fix is to weld a tad more on the unlocking cam on the cocking handle. I'd make sure I had about .020" gap tween the nose of the bolt carrier and the cocking shuttle and weld it. Sounds as though it may need a custom pin in the handle/shuttle hole. Hope it runs good for ya.
