My son has a Bushmaster carbine and wanted to put a scope on it. Yeah, before you reply "shoot the peepers" I tried to get him to leave it off. Anyhoo, the mount doesn't stay tight. It has a knurled knob and I even added a lock washer. Seems to me the mold "seam" may be keeping it from bottoming out. You know the line under the carying handle. My question is what to do to get it to stay tight?

If it's something like this:

It actually has a flat washer that conforms around the seam...it's not flat. Try forming a flat washer that hugs the seam.

If it's like this:

It has that bar that conforms around the seam as well and clamps down as the locking bar is tightened.

OK, I'll bend him one and see if works better. Thanks, bro!

Do you like the lower rig you showed? Is it original or the copies that can be had cheaply? He needs one more like that instead of a deer rifle scope on top. Just as long as it works either way.

That's a Hakkau or however you spell it; supposedly, they are the same company that produces the Colt branded scope. I prefer a red dot system, such as an Eotech or Trijicon, instead.

I have a XM177E2 clone that has a A.R.M.S. No. 39 rail mount and ATN "Ultrasight" red dot. The ATN sight is mounted ahead of the carrying handle and co-witnesses with the iron sights on the carbine.

This is a very handy combo and it is very easy to do double taps on multiple targets very quickly.

The only problem with mounting a scope on an AR with a carrying handle is the high location of the scope. The only way to really mount a scope on the AR with a carrying handle is to use a cheek piece. The Cherokee "Delta" is a semi permanent installation and prevents the use of the iron sights when mounted. Ther are others however.

The best way to scope an AR is with a "flattop" type of receiver.

Drine, you might have better luck useing a drummel and cutting disk to form the top of the washer rather than bending. Just a thought there because one side of the washer has to be flat for engageing the locking knob.
