I'm no expert in the fishing world... FAR from it in fact. Well, let's just face it, Im a terrible fisherman... I thought.

Up to now, I've had the most horrible "luck" fishing you can imagine. I don't even really remember catching a single fish on a non manmade lake in my entire life besides some tiny perch dropping a line right at my feet off a bank.

I just figured I was bad, and that was that.

THEN... I go out fishing with a buddy of mine who's a semi-pro fisher, and lives for fishing... me personally, Ive never been really in to it, as I dont even like fish at all, I just like to sit on the lake relax with a beer and a dip, and take in the scenery.

back to the story. This buddy of mine takes me out, asks to see my tacklebox after I tell him how bad I am, and proceeds to tell me how much garbage Ive bought over the years. He promises me that if I let him pick me 1 single lure, I will catch at least 10 fish in our morning outing.

So he grabs a bag of Yamamoto Senko 6" worms, and tells me to cast it up along the reeds.... sure enough, Im not such a horrible fisher after all... I caught 13 fish in a matter of an hour and a half or so, and tore up the entire bag of Senkos. And this is a spot Ive fished MANY times before with ZERO fish.

I couldn't believe it!

Anyways, since then, I have been fishing once, (2 days ago) we got out late, and I only caught 1 fish, but it was the only fish for me and the other 2 guys with me on my boat.

I'll be fishing Yamamoto's pretty much solely from now on...

Anyone else have any magical lures they'd like to share?

I'm always in for trying something new... I always thought it was the style of fishing and lures made no difference, and I figured all the articles and such were crap, til I saw it first hand... now I'm sold on spending the couple extra bucks to buy the stuff the pros use.

I figured this would be as good a place as any to post what you use... I'll update with my lure choices and catches as the summer progresses. I should be able to go out quite a bit this summer as I'm working nights and get off at the perfect time to hit the lakes, and am still wired from the night before.

So hit me with some other choices, fishing styles all that good stuff.

for example... if you fish spinners, how do you fish it... how fast do you reel, do you pause, jerk... like I said Im a horrible fisher in general, though I can work worms OK... the rest of the stuff is all Greek to me.

No just kidding. You need a magnum for these Mud Turtles here!
The Trick worm is my fave for the pond on my in-laws lake. Black in color and you rig it by starting 1/8" down from the head, a quick in and out with the hook then twist it 180 deg then thread the worm on. You end up with rudder or more like a keel with the hook. NO WEIGHT. Toss it toward the bank. Overhanging trees are good. This worm semi sinks and when you can't see it pull the rod tip up and the 1/8" end of the head acts like a paddle and the worm does tricks. Let it sink again and it wiggles as though it's dying. The bass HAVE to attack.

OT, get it while you can. The impending nuptuals will dig in to your fun time. BUT, there's nothing like it. I'm torn between suggesting you get her into shooting/fishing, etc. and not. You may never get alone time if she likes it or God forbid she does any of it better.
A famous writer, ?, said marriage was the last great adventure! Good luck and God Bless your home.

This might ring a bell with you or M1 Tanker. There's a creek/river I think near Still House Hollow Lake close to Ft Hood. I fished there once and was trying to float a live worm past a stick. Turns out it wasn't a stick, it was a friggin water snake. Oh yeah, I snagged him but not on purpose. It took a while but I finally got him out from under the bank. Then he wanted to chase me. I'm not Real scared of snakes. As long as I see them first and they don't chase me things are good. I made a "strategic withdraw" armed myself with some rocks and a stick and dispatched his ass with extreme prejudice. Broke my junk K-mart pole in the process. I figure I took the field had a wounded rod that I managed to salvage and the snake was dead so I won this battle.:icon_biggrin:

The Senkos I was talking about are used with or without weights as well... I use them without weights, and they still cast really nicely. The sink and wiggle on their side... 90% of the fish I caught with it were on the very first sink... as if a worm had fallen off the trees or reeds.

We have water snakes in the tanks on the land I shoot at... Tehy are all disposed of thanks to my 17 mach 2.

I'll have to check out this trick worm... If you could take apicture of your rigging, it would help a lot too. I wonder if I could rig up a Senko like that? Half the good thing about them is they are just gushing with salt and flavor... you can't cast the worm more than 10-15 times before it starts breaking apart cuz the water is eating the salt out of it.

I need a good pole too... Ive got a $30 Sportsmans Warehouse pole right now... dont even know the brand. It gets the job done fine for me now, but I'll probably have to invest some more money in a couple good ones if I start to get more aggressive with it.

I just have too many hobbies right now between Guns, Trucks, Fishing, and golf, Im gonna have to cut back after the big day.

Oh and the future wife........ no way in hell she will ever shoot a gun unless her life is depending on it. She doesn't like fishing, but she likes tanning on the boat, so that's acceptable to bring her along every now and then.

Someone makes a color chart telling you what color to use for the day depending on the weather, temp, humidity, and such. Yoiu might wanna look into it before buying a lot of one color.
