Since it was brought up elsewhere I decided to see how effective the Smith Enterprises M1 garand brake was, or if it was. I put the brake on and fired 1 clip, 8 rounds. Then removed the bake and fired another clip. The brake is effective, making the recoil softer. If I had to guess I would say 25% - 30% less than unbraked. Anyway I could tell a difference. There was no difference to me in muzzle blast, through my hearing protection. I seemed to be more aware of the action working, with the brake. I used Korean surplus ammo.
I really hate having to mess with resizing my pics. My camera won't go any smaller than 640 by 480.
I have one of their brakes on my M14 and not only does it make it more comfortable to shoot with my bum shoulder, but it tightened up my groups noticeably with the Sightron SII on it. I'm tempted to get one for my L1A1 also, but I haven't shot it enough to really get a feel for it's un-braked accuracy. Once it warms up and the 3-4 feet of snow in this area recedes, I want to shoot it more to really assess how much the smith would tighten up the pattern. The L1A1 is a tight grouper already with the Nikon Monarch on it.

I don't have one but I have heard raves about them
At age 39 I don't think the Garand recoil is btoo much (not like a Mosin-Nagant) but I might change my mind in 20 years
