another project, unstarted but certainly doable. I have one of the Williams Aluminum FAL receivers; not strong enough for 7.62x51 but they have been used successfully for pistol caliber FALS.

I have the basic components at hand; receiver, Australian L1A1 lower, miscellaneous parts; I have a barrel but I don't know (don't think I can) if I can use it.

I have debated caliber for quite a while; but now I have decided that is will be in a proven caliber - semi-rimmed, feeds reliably from a magazine: .38 Super.

It may actually have enough power to drive a FAL piston; if not I'll make it a straight blowback design.

Thoughts and suggestions?

I know there was an outfit in Dallas that sold conversion kits. Rhine-something or other.

Rhineland is out of business. My SIL has a 45 kit. I built mine in 7.62X25. It weighs under 6 lbs but is all aluminum.

Mine uses PPS41 mags now as the PPS43 mags I had issues with feeding.

While I love the 38super the 7.62X25 is the way to go. Cheap ammo. 1950fps out of a 16" barrel and able to hit pie-plate @200 yards. Mill the bottom off the bolt, no locking shoulder and use a buffer after adjusting the springs for blowback.

And keep your rails oiled. Once you burn through the anodizing the receiver will wear quick. I know of one guy that built one in .223 that got 4000 rds before he was replacing his WAC. If you polish the carrier (or chrome it like I did) and keep it lubed it will last a long time. I have 2000 rds and nothing as yet but I keep the rails oiled.

If anyone needs an IMBEL bolt/bolt carrier to mill/cut up I have one that would be a good candadate. If any interest, let me know.
