NRA Opposes Anti-Hunting Petition to Ban Lead Ammunition

Tuesday, August 03, 2010

Fairfax, Va.— The National Rifle Association strongly opposes a petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban lead ammunition in the United States.

This radical anti-hunting organization is incorrectly claiming that lead ammunition, the most commonly used ammunition by hunters and sportsmen, is a danger to wildlife and the rule it asks for is contrary to language in the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976.

“These extremist groups are trying to ban bullets under a federal law that specifically doesn’t apply to ammunition. In addition, they are using false data and emotion instead of sound science to further their political agenda,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “The CBD is an anti-hunting organization attempting to assert its political relevancy at the expense of America’s hunters and sportsmen. The NRA will not allow the CBD to mislead the public about the effects of lead ammunition.”

The "scientific evidence" suggesting lead ammunition is taking a “horrific toll” on wildlife is bogus. While the population of our national symbol, the bald eagle, has been increasing according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the bald eagle is also being used as a “lead tragedy” by CBD and its allies. To achieve their political goals, they are deliberately concocting information to sway the opinions of policy makers.

Hunters and gun owners are the greatest contributors to conservation. In addition to volunteer efforts to improve habitat, billions of dollars dedicated to habitat and wildlife restoration projects have been generated through the payment of hunting license fees and excise taxes on firearms, ammunition and other hunting equipment. Groups like the CBD are attempting to eliminate all hunting by eliminating access to traditional forms of ammunition and public hunting lands. Their agenda is clearly to drive away hunters by mandating the use of costly ammunition they cannot afford.

“Hunting should not be an activity limited to the wealthy because every hunter, regardless of their tax bracket, is essential to sustaining America's sporting heritage,” concluded Cox. “The NRA will counter this deceptive attack on hunters and gun owners with sound science and the truth.” ?

Have read lots of OTHER sources as well. And I think they are trying to make gun ownership a "class" thing like in Europe through high pricing. Too expensive for joe sixpack if each round cost 2$. Just saying.

This is just one more piece of the puzzle. We're being attacked by everybody, from every possible angle, in the hope that if even one teensy little bit of the BS sticks, it's a victory for "them".

"They" think, perhaps somewhat correctly, that "we", the American public, are now somewhat numbed by the informational overload of the last year and a half, and are weary and tired, and just want to ignore it all. I'm pretty sure that I've heard the words "Trillion dollars" a trillion times since the last election, and it wasn't in common usage before that. Now we've got Michelle in Spain, before that it was BP and the oil spill, cash for clunkers (which did serve to get many of the BO bumper stickers off the road), etc., etc., etc...

Lead is a horrible substance. Indeed, I'm scheduled to go to school next month, to be certified in spotting lead paint, lest people's kids eat it. But, lead isn't as bad as "they" would have us believe. People dig up bullets in civil war battlefields all the time. They still look pretty much how they looked when they landed; lead doesn't *dissolve* like a lump of sugar.

These a-holes that profess to care about every little creature... don't really give a s*** if an animal hops away wounded and in pain, and dies a slow, painful death, if it was hit with a bullet made of something other than lead, except to the extent that they'll use that, next, to ban whatever might come along after lead bullets are banned.

And, yeah, I'm sure the U.N. is going to pipe in on this, too, on MY dime.

These are the same sort of weenies that calculate that those compact florescent bulbs are *good* for the environment, even though 99% of them will wind up crushed in landfills, spilling MERCURY into the environment, because, according to "them", it'll result in less mercury coming from coal-fired power plants. Maybe that's all well and good, BUT, if you break ONE in your house, you've got mercury IN YOUR HOUSE, and that's going to screw up many, many people, and that's an undeniable scientific reality. As opposed to unscientific conjecture about lead bullets.

And, FWIW, I'm told that CFL bulbs in Oz and NZ have inductors built in, to correct the "power factor", and that the same bulbs in North America have a jumper where that coil is supposed to go. So much for being "green"; they burn more juice that what they would with the inductor, for a given amount of light.

People want power over other people and they can't have the power they want or think they deserve, they are smater than all of us common people, when we have the ability to say no and back it up.
To have the power, we have to be disarmed!
I used to get upset over this stuff from these weenies until a cop friend (fed) said the following to me:
Who are they going to get to come to my house and take my firearms and ammunition?
200 million gun owners (est) 190,000 cops working at any given time, and only 500,000 in total, old data but close enough for the point and they live among us and most won't do it if ever ordered.
The military won't do it! Are they going to send my kid, (Master Guns) Marine Corps to his
old mans house to take his guns, I don't suspect that will ever happen.
We taught the kids to not obey illegal orders, and we did a good job during my 24 years on active duty and my kid is doing the same, as well as all the other sons and now daugthers on active duty.
Like all past gun grabs by countries, people have to be scared, disorganized, or not give a rats ass and none of those fit at least 20 million american vets I know of.
Gun confiscation like drugs, just say no!
What are they going to do then?
Nothing!

If you control the ammo then you have gun control plain and simple,...we need to remind our Government constantly what our forefathers meant by the 2nd Amendment..and Bambi wasn't it!

what will these a$$***** think up next.
hunters care more about conservation and the enviorment than anyone.
you never hear about the anti's donating money to farmer joe; so he doesn't have to sell his land to a developer. who will put up another damn shopping mall, there by reducing wildlife habitat. :1106:

I'm going to try and ease into this conversation without inflaming anyone and still give my opinion or at least enough of it not to get banned...check our country's history.Every once in a while some part of the government trys to run over a "selected" groups right to bear arms, they may have a legit reason or not. This is what is in back of most gunowner's mind. Can we as a group, thru our local reps, make the laws strong enough to protect our rights and will they be observed/enforced ? I don't think so.
