My grandson is always wanting to go shooting with me. So to perpetuate the numbers of shooters and gun owners he received a chipmunk .22 for his 5th birthday. He does well at keeping his finger off the trigger until ready to fire. I only have to say something about half the time for him to watch where his barrel is pointing. The hardest test of patience has been reminding him not to let the barrel drop to the dirt when reloading. All in all for his age he does well. He has already asked to shoot the bigger guns and if he can have all my guns when I die or he turns 18. The occasional headaches are worth it to hear the excitement in his voice telling others about going shooting.

As a fellow American, and a fellow Texan, w/o any kids (and therefore, no kids/grandkids in the pipeline, at this time), I am somewhat envious of you. A tip of the 10 gallon Texan hat to you... but....
A little eyeball protection is in order there, even with a .22, even if just for educational purposes...

Noted. You are correct. I guess I'll have to get him his own shooting bag also.

The wife of my shooting/reloading buddy took the pics from their house. I didn't know about them until she emailed them to me a couple of weeks later.
They are some of my favorite.

Way to go, Grandpa SSwee! It was my Grandad who taught me to shoot.

I tried to get my son to go with me but I guess hanging with your dad isn't as cool as hanging with grandpa. My earliest memory of guns and hunting is going coon hunting with my paternal grandpa at around 5 or 6 years old.

And a huge thumbs up from the old dinosaur. Started boy on BB gun when he was 5 and naturally his little sister had to do it to so she started when she was 4. Cut the stock off my single shot bolt action 22 to fit them but saved the butt end. It didn't take long before I was able to put it back on. By the time they were 12 they could shoot qualifying scores with the 45 ACP at 25 yards.
Never had to lock up my guns, If they wanted to shoot all they had to do was ask and we were on it. Gun safety was just part of the process and slowly taught, firmly learned. Always had guns in reach when I was a kid and so they were never a mysterious forbidden thing that we had to sneak them out and do something stupid with them.
My guess is you will never have to get that call about your little fellow shooting out car windows or power line insulators.

Took my 15yr old shooting this past Friday. He always has a good time, but it would have been better if it wasn't so hot and humid.
