My No4 mK1 Long Branch '43.
I paid $100 @Dunham's - I looked through all the display models: mismatched numbers/bolt wont close/bent front sight protector/smoothbore - finally the counter guy says "wait, we just got 3 more in I'll bring them all out" two were not too good but then he pulls the last one out and it looks unfired! and to further sweeten the deal it has the wrong price on it (lets just say I bought it REALLY quick)

Signal that is a nice rifle and by the way you take a good photo.
Now my question I have a British 'Wilkinson Shetfield' M 1907 bayonet for my SMLE.
I looks just like your M 17 Bayonet are they one in the same?

Here's my Enfield No. 4 Mk 1. Funny (kind of ) story about how I got it. I still live at home, and my mother told me many tomes, NO GUNS! However, on the occasion of my 21 b-day, she changed her mind. I found out after my buddy KMURPHY bought this rifle for $135. If I had known when we saw it at the store, I would 've bought it then and then there. KMURPHY later sold it to me for $200, to help out with his college books. Considereing the work he put into it, that's fair. (By the way, that is NOT me shooting- I was taking pictures)

No, they are not the same. The bayonet for the SMLE won't fit the P14/M1917 design rifle and the US made bayonet will not fit the SMLE. As you know the British used the P14 rifle (the .303 original version of the M1917). The bayonet for that rifle is interchangable with mine but not with the SMLE bayonet. The SMLE bayonet and the P14/M1917 bayonet looked enough alike that the British gonvernment specified that there should be some obvious differentiating marking to distinguish the two bayonets to avoid any mix ups. That is why there are two grooves cut into the wooden grip panels on the U.S. made bayonet that you see in the photo. That way the soldier could avoid the inconvenience of trying to "fix bayonets" with one that just is not going to fit his rifle.

Let me see if I get this correct.
The P-14 is in .303 British
The M1917 (copied after the P-14) is in 30-06.

I picked up my only No 4 MK1 today.
I looked at two and one had four grooves and the other only had two.
I'm not sure I know anything as to why the two different barrels.
Mine sure isn't pristene. It was imported by CIA and it has the good ol' cosmoline to be cleaned off. But I can't wait to find out how she shoots.
I did notice the front blade is sitting WAY off to the left (looking from above front).
I have a lot of firearms and a lot of C&Rs but I'm finally glad I added a LE to the bunch.
I might have to look for another model now. :icon_biggrin:

Thanks! I definitely am selective... but it's more a function of available funds than of snobbery. :icon_biggrin: If I had the funds, I'd have enough space to get anything and everything. Since I don't - 1 gun room's already full and the safe is now full, too -- I need to be a bit more selective. I do like veteran warhorses, but since I can't have 'em all I like to get the nicest possible example of whatever I'm looking for. The 2A1 isn't nearly a nice (in terms of fit/finish) as the others, but AIM was selling them last year for a pretty good deal ($200 for the rifle and a battlepack of SA 7.62 NATO), so I had to jump on it.

Thanks, Norton! I don't have any SMLEs, just the ones pictured. I've always liked the No.4s and always wanted a Lithgow No.1 MkIII*, so now all I'm really looking for are a Maltby No.4 and Long Branch No.4... Enfields aren't the primary focus of my collection, but I definitely like the ones I have.
The '43 Faz has English Walnut furniture - just very light compared to the others I've seen. Part of the lightness is attributed to the lighting when I took the photo - it looks a bit darker in person. The price was definitely right on that one - $89 at a gunshop in Seattle about 15 years ago. It reminds me a lot of some of the lighter colored walnut stocks you see on some of the Swede Mausers. The '54 Faz has a typical 50's era beech furniture set. The '43 is near mint and the '54 was purchased from someone who had only taken it out of the mummy wrap and never fired it - nearly as unissued as they come. I like that one a lot, too, because its S/N puts it in the range of the Irish contract.
Cheers,

Are the M1917s 30.06 or .303?
The US Model 1917 rifle is .30-06. The rifle was a WWI wartime emergency conversion to supplant our inadequate production capaciity for the Springfield '03. The model 1917 was basically the British P14 (Made in the US for the British) adapted to fire the standard US Cartridge. Of course the P14 was made in the standard .303 British caliber.
The design modifications were more complex than you might think because the .30-06 was a much longer cartridge than the .303 and the US cartridge was rimless where as the .303 cartridge is a rimmed design. In light of that, it is amazing that the conversion and tooling adaptations were accomplished so quickly and implemented in no less than three seperate production facilities. In less than two years the Model 1917 production far exceded that of the Springfield '03.

05-15-2008, 11:25 PM
"Don't forget the original design was to have a rimless round. "
That's true. The Brits planned for the P14 to be a .276 rimless design but it never went into production that way because they decided that it was imprudent to change calibers in the middle of a war. (Unlike Italy and Japan who both tried to change their standard rifle cartridges right in the middle of WWII)
Old Jimmy
05-15-2008, 11:29 PM
I bet Italy and Japan had logistical nightmares over that choice!!
I was watching a BBC special about the defence of Moscow. For the first time I saw P14 rifles being issued to the workers defending the city. The new open policy showing non Soviet equipments was refreshing. Also US M-3 and British Matilda tanks.

My gunsmith had a couple of these Parker Hale adjustable sights that he found among his parts. He called me and I had him install this one for me. It is click adjustable for both windage and elevation. It has six different apertures that are selected by rotating a wheel at the left edge of the aperture disk. It must always be elevated to shoot as there is no provision for aiming with the sight ladder in the down position. It really has helped me to get smaller and more consistent 100 yard groups.
When I went to the range I took a bag of front sight blades in case I had to swap the original for one of a different height. Good thing too because I did have to go two sizes taller to get a good 100-yard zero at the lowest elevaton adjustment.
By the way, the photos of my rifle with the original flip sight are on page five of this thread.

Back before I knew any better I bought and sold an Enfield for $70. It was in very good condition with a brass butt plate but the numbers didn't match. I donn't remember any other details other than is was dated 42 or 43. At the time I just wanted a bolt gun to hunt but .303 was hard to find. Since then I've looked every now and then for one like it but haven't come across one. I'll get another .303 one of these days but for now I've just got a beat up 65'2A that I'm afraid to strip because the stock repairs will probablly fall apart.

http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/albums/EBR/Lithgow_smle.jpg
1920 Lithgow (Australia) No. III Mk1* that was FTR'd in 1946. The black "stuff" is tar, used as a wood preservative, haven't shot it yet but here's the target when I shot the No. 4:
http://iwantthatknife.com/Gallery/albums/military_guns/Savage_Enfield_2.jpg
An intersting side note - the ammo is WWII British Surplus; some with Cordite. All corrosive; so hot soapy water to clean; the other surprise - since it is 60+ year old ammo (some from Radway Green) several times I would hear the pop of the primer; the sizzle of the powder burning; and then bang...although I've never fired a black powder gun before - I know what it must feel like. Even with the old ammo it shot pretty well for an old clunker of a gun! I am going to try to shoot the No. III this weekend. If I do I'll post pictures....

LSA #1 MK III 1915
Lithgow #1 MK III 1922
Savage #4 MK 1 US Property returned from Turkey
BSA #5 MK1
With the exception of the rear sight, the LSA is all matching; the Stock Disc is marked 56 ID.
The #5 is all matching; made in 1945; the interior of the barrel is mint; it is marked with a P and 45 indicating a barrel replacement in 1945; an interesting situation considering the gun was made in 1945. The #5 has no importer's mark...

That's MJ at Bisley. The green wall at 200 yareds has ten loops and they show a target (huns head) evey seven seconds for four seconds and you have to find it and hoit it on the nose nose for a score. The forhead or chin is a no score. Ten shots per string max 50 points. I ran 36-40-46 as I recall. I should have been 2ed place.

Bore slugs at .310.5 and is bright with strong rifling. best of all, she is not import marked. It took a lot of Enfield buying to find this perfect shooter. I couldn't be more happy with her well, maybe if I had a P&H target site like above.

02-16-2011, 11:22 PM
My old cheapie camera doesn't do so good on close-ups, trying to photograph a firearm is kinda frustrating. The blurry image seems to start at about 6-7' from lens, and gets worse at closer range. Maybe borrow my wife's and get some better pics.
The bandolier and clips came with the gun, the ammo and bayo did not. Picked up the bayo in a separate GB auction and I don't know if that type is authentic to WWII era Mk III's or not. The ammo was from 2 boxes of old surplus I had lying around and I just thought it ought to go in the clips since I had them... One box marked CIA POF IIRC (is that Pakistani?) and the other box had smeared markings. Haven't looked up headstampings, but the box with unreadable markings may be Greek.
I'm not a nut about total correctness when it comes to matching accessories and ammo with a gun, I mainly am just aiming for a representative example of what a soldier, in this case an ANZAC of WWII, would have carried.

picked this up at a gunshow about 2 years ago for 150. The guy was askin 275 and with how beat up it is, i offered him 150 he laughed i walked away and end of the show he asked if i still wanted it. Pretty rough shape i don't know why someone painted the metal green then tried sanding it off in some places but the bore is pristine and shoots like a dream, all i really care about. Anyway dated 1943 numbers match i don't know where it was made as it doesn't have any other markings except the serial number and the date. no import marks either. p.s. i am aware that the hammer is back i checked and cleared it and didn't release the hammer at time of pics

if your town has a free ad paper, then pay $5 and run an ad wanting to buy an enfield rifle or any old rifle. it is that easy. take some cash and go see all of them put up for sale. i have bought several this way for very cheap money. even if your not interested in the rifle and it is cheap, just buy it and sell it here.
i use to go to garage sales with my wife and would ask if they had any old military stuff or guns to sell. you may be suprised what you will find.

Generally speaking they are well made and better finished than UK rifles of the same dates. Still the post war MkII's trump all but the best Savage rifles of '42 and '43 and BSA rifles of 1944 and 1945.

My 1954 Fazakerley No.4 Mk2 (posted on page 5) put me out about $400 a few years ago - the price tag was a little higher at the time because it's one of the Irish Contract rifles. I found mine on one of the auction sites (gunbroker.com, I think). They come up from time to time on the various internet trader forums. Places like Empire Arms have them every now and again, too.

The burl on the stock looks great, nice weapon. I allways wanted one since I was young. I recently saw a old episode of the early 60s TV British show 'The Saint' set in Malaya 1964. They spliced in late 1950s newsreel shots of what were clearly Austrailan troops jumping off helicopters with your short Enfield and Owens.
Anyway great picture

I don't consider that a bad price. I would try to buy one for a grand if it was a new in the wrap Enfield. 600 would be better but I have been watching GB for one and have not found one. I recently got me a Fazlackery to go with my newly aquired Long Branch. Both rifles are 1944 marked and I can see what you were talking about, the Faz is a little bit more used than the Long Branch.
